Understanding Jewellery: The 20th Century: The Twentieth Century

Beautiful coffee table book.

To start with, I did NOT pay attention to the measurements on this book. When it arrived, I was not expecting it to be so... well... BIG. The book comes in a larger, slide-in box that protects the cover while still showing off the spine and cover imagery (duplicated onto the box). The book itself is beautifully done. It breaks the decades up into sections, so you can see the evolution of high-end jewellery design as it travels along the timeline of the 20th century. You can see the post-Victorian influence in the early part of the century, and the art deco influence later on. All the way up until the 90s, when the influences are heavily pop-culture centered. It's a wonderful journey. It doesn't delve too deeply into the MANY different jewellers out there, relying more heavily on a few of the more prominent and emblematic makers. But I think they do a good job at showing styles that way without muddying the trends. Beautifully done.
