Delightful and clever
Absolutely charming. Delightful, wholesome, quirky and enthralling. Read it to my 5yo and he loved it, giggles and mild peril aplenty!

Wonderful!
This is a wonderfully imaginative story! I immediately fell in love with the book’s magical world and became invested in the colourful characters that feisty orphan, Nine, discovers inside the house. Who would have thought that one could feel so acutely for a troll with an emotional attachment to a feather duster? Or a wooden spoon in a kilt? This book is full of heart and humour, and I can’t wait for the next in the series to be published!

A marvellous magical escape
I just spent a delightful afternoon at The House At The Edge of Magic. With a feisty main character, plenty of silliness and magic, this book is the perfect escape for young (and not so young!) readers. I’ll be re-reading it with my kids and can’t wait to read the next in the series once it is released!

A story that's nearly there, but not yet... (2.5 STARS)
From the blurb, this book promises so much yet it feels like a missed opportunity that falls short of the stunning cover artwork. We were really excited to read this one by Amy Sparkes. Her imagination is her gift and there are so many concepts in The House at the Edge of Magic to love. But that's the problem. This book feels like a long list of creative ideas crammed into a plot that never gets going. And in the process of packing every page in this shortish story with every clever idea on the list, very little room's been left to learn about the terrific troupe of characters Amy's created in (and out of) the House. We finished it thinking 'this has so much potential but...' It needs more 'something': depth, plot, character development, connection, tighter editing - who knows! Perhaps a cup of strawberry tea?!Did we enjoy it? Sort of. It's an odd yet likeable book that bounces all over the place.Would we buy it again? Not sure although we may well keep an eye out for a sequel at the library.
