Crying In H Mart

Crying and Healing
This is a lovely book...honest and open about family dynamics and relationships. My mum passed away just over 3 years ago and I could really relate and feel Michelle's story.

Loved this book!
Bought this book because I love Japanese Breakfast, but found it so beautifully written. It’s heartwarming and tragic and the descriptions of mealtimes make your mouth water. Could not recommend enough!

Beautiful story
I love Japanese Breakfast so owning this book was a no brainer. I sobbed through most of the book, sad and happy tears. It was an absolute joy reading about Michelle's description of not only Korean food itself, and not also just eating it, but the love of making and preparing it. I'll read it again and again.

One crap book!
Crying In H-Mart was the most boring drivel I have ever read. This author lacks warmth and the capacity to engage a reader. She expressed her love for her mother many times but I feel the feeling wasn't mutual. She never got on with her father, they always bickered. Not long after her mother died, she parted from her father. Also I couldn't stomach the food she said she enjoyed eating at Korean restaurants, like offal stew & other very strange and unappetising dishes. For God's sake! It put me off. Also on page 28 where she wrote it's a common cultural thing in Korea for grandmas to clasp their hands together in the shape of a gun, & with index fingers pressed together, her grandma penetrated Michelle's anus through her pants. I found this book very long & tortured read. It was so unappealing. I lost count of how many times I nodded off while attempting to read it. It fell from my hands MANY times. It was one big yawn. I'm giving it away now. I don't know I want to visit Korea after reading this book. Give this one a miss.
