Love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides -- well-organized and concise self-directed trip planning with tips and recommendations
I'm a big fan of the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides -- I wish I'd had this last year when we were in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and this was one of my primary planning resources for my trip to Munich. Thorough, well-organized, excellent content, etc., I think these are worth their weight in gold in from a planning standpoint, and to keep close at hand during your trip itself.

way too much focus on old buildings and churches instead of mountains
the book title includes the Bavarian Alps and this is what is special in the mountainous south of germany as opposed to the flatlands in the north yet the book hardly covers the mountain and outdoor activity :(. These guides can quickly help plan a holiday as you flick thru the literally hundreds of photos to see what might be interesting to visit. Page after page of old buildings and statues and virtually none of mountains - in mountain areas the standard photo is a boat on the lake that often occur in the glacial carved valleys around the mountains. Zugspitze is the tallest mountain in germany and easily accessed from Garmisch-PertenKirch by cog train-gondola-cable car combo up to the peak for great walks and views but all the notes and photos of houses and boats with just a couple of miserly sentences not given any insight (page 221). Likewise for the mountains near the Neuschwanstein castle with the full page map of the area (page 235) nearly hinting that there is a cable car to the summit of Tegelberg but gives no details - is it worth paying to go up???If you are interested in old churches and statues then this is a great book to help plan your time but if you have an interest in the outdoors and mountains then you will need some other guide for the Bavarian Alpsdisappointing waste of my timedavid in melbourne australia

Helping you plan a more self-satisfying vacation while uncovering unique sites
I used this book to plan my Munich street walks (using the 3D drawings of neighborhoods). If you can arrange to tour both the Residenz and Nymphenburg palaces, you won't be disappointed. They are very different in decor and setting (2 separate experiences for the Wittlesbach family). Drawn to the multitude of color photos of sites, I selected many small towns to visit. The 2016 edition has added better photos and more off-the-beaten-path towns to give you many choices. DK's cut-away view drawings of interiors is enough to separate this book from its competitors. Here are some towns that I had an exhilarating time visiting: Landshut, Ottobeuren, Straubing, Ingolstadt, and Passau's Glass Museum.

Lots of good, clear detail. Ideal for planning a trip. Heavy to carry around!
This is an excellent guidebook, and the DK Eyewitness Travel series hasn't let me down yet!The book has a great history of Munich, to put the place into context, and a good detailed guide to the main places to go and things to see. The maps are useful and clear too.The only downside is that, being printed in full colour on special dense paper, this book is very heavy, so you might not want to carry it around all day!

Good guide with lots of information - I tend to pair these with a DK Top 10 guide, so i carry the smaller one around and have the bigger one to read on the plane/ in the hotel.

A first class guide book
A very useful guide to Munich and beyond. It follows the same format as the other DK Eyewitness books in the series. The detachable map and subway guide is a nice touch (it is made of a plastic material so will last much longer than the thin paper ones)
