Good for kids
There are some flaws in the illustrations (including polar bears in Antarctica) but the story itself is a fun read for kids. We love the Little People Big Dreams books.

Another favourite in the collection
7 yo daughter loves these books. We bought this one as Ernest Shackleton is someone she had been learning about at school. She was very pleased with this Christmas present!

Another great biographical picture book by Vegara
The Little People Big Dreams series is great if you want a biographical picture book to introduce an important person to a younger child or as a quick primer story for older kids before they do more research. If you are looking for a biography this will probably disappoint. I usually love the Little People Big Dreams series in that they are biographical picture books that make learning about a new person accessible to younger children. My 5 year old has thoroughly enjoyed this series as we have been slowly going through them. This book about Ernest Shackleton is slightly different in format that the other books in the Little People Big Dreams series. Most of the books start out with where they were born, any adversity while growing up, and follow the life of the person from beginning to end. As a biographical picture book, they take the reader through the life of the main character. This one differs in that it tells the beginning of where he is from, growing up, and then it actually tells you the story of his adventure that made him famous and ends there. Vegara deciding to leave the story on this high note in this work for children isn't surprising as it leaves the readers on an uplifting beat given that following the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, he fought in a couple wars and ultimately died on while on his last and final voyage, the Quest Expedition.I'm okay that most of the books in this series are more biographical storybooks than "cram all the facts into the story" type of book. The beautiful pictures and the way Vegara selects the most inspiring parts of each biography encourage children to dream and tells them that they also can achieve those big dreams too.
