PBY Catalina In Action

PBY Catalina
I found this well researched and written and an enlargement on the original publication. However I preferred the original format, although small in size better than this format. I don't really think its in action, this format I fell just discusses the different models of the aircraft

larger but not really better then the previous
60% bigger then previous the PBY "in action", drawings showing the differences between the versions are the same, all pictures seem to be new but not all of them are of good quality, would have make sense to enhance some pictures digitally, some pictures would rather fit in the "Walk Around", still no pictures of foreign versions All in all acceptable, but not a big bang.

Nice, But Not Quite What I Had In Mind
This is a good book, probably priceless if you are tackling the Airfix or Academy 1/72 scale kits, but I have to agree with a lot of the three star reviews for this title in that it is a bit heavy on model by model information and fairly lacking on any sort of "in action" squadron history. Older "In Action" books would typically start each section off with a few paragraphs of history, and most of the writers would pack these paragraphs full of history that richly added to the reputation of the series. The more recent Squadron "in Action" tomes seem to have moved to a strict pictorial history through photo and caption. That's wonderful if the captions are super informative, but some of the captions in this title left a bit to be desired. It was also a bit heavy on "walk around" series pics, not a bad thing, but it's not a "walk around" series book. While the writing was in need of some boost here, the photos are rather good, particularly the war time color photography. Model builders will be thrilled with the Consolidated archive photos of technical bits like the bow turret and landing gear on the -5A variants. For the color pics I bumped it to a four star, but being a Squadron Signal book guy since the early '80's, I am a bit worried in the direction they are carrying the "In Action" series. Recommended with a bit of caution.

Excellent pictures
Not the best from Squadron but many excellent pictures and very well produced. Would have benefited from a broader coverage of operators and operations.
