Susan WelsStanford: Portrait of a university

Stanford
The history of the founding of the university was very interesting, seeing how the "Robber Baron" money of the 19th century could result in the establishment of such a major institution. Particularly interesting was the comparison with more rigid traditional 19th century universities and the more open ideas upon which the univesity was founded.

great book!
This is a fantastic book about Stanford! Our son loves the school and hopes to attend one day- he spends hours pouring over this book-gives a great history and has many beautiful pictures- would absolutely recommend!

Nice Memorabilia
I had purchased this for my Father-in-law and it was a nice touch of nostalgia for an alumni. Thank you.

Beautiful book with many evocative photos
This is a beautiful full-color picture book about the University from its inception through its 100th Anniversary and beyond. Lots of fascinating historical photos--such as Teddy Roosevelt striding across the Quad at the turn of the century, photos of damage from both the '06 earthquake and the '89 earthquake, sit-ins of the 1960s, Nobel laureates of in the 1980s and gorgeous photos of the campus and doings today. A section at the end highlights the various schools--Business, Law, Education, Arts & Sciences, etc.
