Lamp is functional
OK, so this lamp is functional. It is adjustable, has a nice switch to turn on and off, and works well. But it also has shortcomings. The lamp is not that tall at about 14 inches. The guy who rated it with one star is right that the lamp clearly states that it is a maximum of 40 watts. A normal light bulb would stick out, but I had a 13 watt compact energy saver bulb that worked great (puts out 60 watt equivalent). And, even though the adjustment mechanism is functional, it is UGLY. This lamp looks so ugly that I doubt you want it on any desk that is viewable by guests. I use it in my computer room so I am fine with it but if you think this will be thought of as a cute little lamp, you are dead wrong. So, it functions and it works well for me. But there are also much nicer looking lamps at similar prices. If you like the function, don't care about looks, and are plannig to use a compact energy saver bulb, go ahead and buy.

Nice lamps for the price
I was looking for lamps to place on top of my desk cabinets to provide ambient lighting in my room. I needed something that I could point up towards the ceiling. These lamps fit the bill nicely: they were short (13.5 inches high), and the shades could be oriented upward. These lamps can be adjusted up and down on a wire shaft as well. I think they have a cool design. There is one problem though that I have with these lamps. The metal shades are just too short. A typical florescent lamp protrudes beyond the shades, and if you've ever looked at a florescent lamp that was un-shaded, it is very bright. I used reflector florescent bulbs, which minimize this problem, even though they protrude beyond the shades as well. They use a standard bulb socket, so it may be difficult to find bulbs short enough for these lamps.Bottom line: nice lamps, short shades.

Small desk lamp...small.
The lamp is quite a bit smaller than i imagined but fits well on my desk leaving room for more important things.A standard light bulb sticks out too far for my liking and have found a smaller bulb that is concealed by the shade a much better option, i dislike the glare from direct viewing of a bulb. It feels well constructed and is highly adjustable...keep in mind this is a task light for direct illumination of what you point it at, and not for ambient room lighting. The power switch is cord mounted six inches from the base of the lamp.Ideally suited as a desk lamp, and i'm rather pleased overall. The price is ridiculously low.

its cheap... but it's okay
it is cheap. it is of fair quality. it is adjustable. it makes a great grow light for plants. i can adjust it... twist it... aim it... adjust it up and down... it holds one of those cfl grow lights nicely. it works great in my situation and hobbies. it has an on / off switch about 3 feet from the plug in end of the cord. it has a very high quality lamp socket inside of the metal housing but for some reason it is rated for 40 watts. the cfl lights are 13 watts 26 watts etc and supply plenty of light for me and are safe. i am very happy with this purchase and i ordered enough of them at this crazy price to do all my grow light hobby projects. thank you.

Compact, but a few issues.
I purchased two of these. I really like the design, it is small and compact. However, one of the lamps did not work, so I returned it. The other works great. The lamp hood is quite short, so a regular bulb sticks out beyond the hood. I had to purchase special compact bulbs.

Unusually attractive - well made desk lamp
I like unusual things that aren't over-the-top, and this lamp fits that category well. It's well made, so should stand up fairly well. I used an 18 watt reflective flouresent bulb in it, as a regular A-shaped bulb protrudes slightly and light overscatter tends to be a little annoying at desk level, but suit yourself. I also like that it takes up a minimal amount of room on the desk top.

Smaller than I thought
I bought this for my dorm room, but it was smaller than I thought... Plus I had those eco spiral-looking bulbs and that was definitely too big for the lamp. Nearly blinded me when I turn it on. Also, although the description on Amazon says its 60W, the box I got delivered was 40W... Don't know what happened there - pretty unhappy about that. It looks good and has a good design and all, but just wasn't for me.

Just a small lamp.
This is a very simple straight forward cheap lamp. It is height adjustable but as short as it is you'll probably raise it to the highest point. Nothing special here, but i haven't had any problems.
