Thumbs up
This is ergonomic and a great amature swamp cooler, not requiring a hose. It has about about a three gallon fill up that lasts a couple days. I live in the desert. My air conditioner was giving up in the extreme heat. This gave the air system a boost. I think it could cool a large RV on its own in an emergency. I am very happy with it. It is lightweight. I think this is a different model than the earlier ones. You can't put ice in it.

not that good. It is true that if you put it ...
The unit is convenient because it rolls. But it turns out that, unless you have some kind of hose in the house, the easiest way to fill it is with a large water pitcher... but then you need a large enough sink to get it under the faucet. I fill it from the shower-- kind of a hassle as it turns out, especially since it's an everyday thing during the hot months. Now, on to its actual efficacy. My overall review would be: not that good. It is true that if you put it pretty close to the bed (or wherever you are), you will feel a cool breeze coming off of it. But the way it works is via evaporation, and if there's a lot of humidity in the air (because this creates it), it means that you have to leave doors and windows open to vent the moisture, which then means that the ability of this thing to cool a small space is completely negated; the open doors and windows bring in more warm air to cool than it can actually handle. It IS better than nothing, and especially if you use an additional fan with it (so that it can be near and window but still get the cool air to you on the other side of the room)... but it's NOTHING like an air conditioner, and though I didn't have any problems with the company (shipping, or whatever), I would not buy this product again.

so it sounds like a fan with a trickling noise in the background ...
People have mentioned this is previous reviews, but i'll try to summarize:Noise: Evap Coolers are literally a water pump + fan, so it sounds like a fan with a trickling noise in the background as the pump drizzles water from the tank into the cooling medium.Performance: Evap Coolers are related to humidifiers, so the air that comes out is quite moist. Likewise, they work best in dry climates or in areas with sufficient ventilation to keep humidity levels from gradually rising and performance from dropping.Because they do not use a Condenser pump like traditional A/C, Evap Coolers use less electricity and are more robust (fewer moving parts). But what about this product, specifically? It's fine, except...1: No remote. For what I pay, i'd expect it to come with one.2: Water level meter. Without internal lighting or high-contrast color backing, the simple slot that shows tank level is hard to read, especially in low light conditions. Even better would be an optional alarm that sounds when tank levels reach 50% and 0%.3: Water intake slot. While dauntingly narrow at first, it's not as bad as it looks. Instead of trying to pour water into the narrow intake slot, just poor water directly into the evap vents above it. The water will simply pour through the media and empty into the tank, which is where the water was going anyways.4: Fan noise. It's not that bad, but I also run a Vornado 660 fan right next to it and the difference in noise for a given air displacement is substantial; the Vornado is near-silent vs. the ClimateStar's low hum.

Dead on Arrival
Hard to give this thing a fair review, since it showed up dead. When I plugged it in, i could hear a light humming, but turning the two dials did nothing (filled it up first, of course). On the positive side, it wasn't too big or bulky, so moving it around and eventually draining it and returning it wasn't too bad.

Convair NGP-CS ClimateStar swamp cooler
I live in central New Mexico and this cooler works great!I fulltime in a camper and this cooler has allowed me to stop using the AC so far this season, we've experienced high temps in the mid 80s and the large volume of chilled air this unit produces keeps the camper comfortable.I park it in front of the screen door and turn on the exhaust fan in the bathroom, at the other end of the camper, and that chill air flows right on through cooling the whole interior!Perhaps when we start hitting the summer highs in the 3 digits, I may have to supplement the cooler with the AC! But, then again maybe not, this unit has 3 fan speeds and I've yet to go higher then #2!The solid construction and good design in addition to it's great performance, make this cooler well worth the money!
