High quality book. Cramped layout.
This was a rare landmark exhibit at The Met. The book is a good size and high quality. Underneath the dust cover is a plain, fabric hardcover. There are a few essays in the beginning, and the rest of the book is the catalogue of the exhibit. The photos are high quality, and there are plenty of fascinating artifacts to marvel at.There are two drawbacks:1) The layout of the catalogue is very cramped. It felt like they crammed as much as possible onto each page. You have to flip back and forth a lot because oftentimes the title, description, and photo are on separate pages. It detracts from the experience.2) The text, written by multiple authors, is sometimes wordy and dense. It was harder to get through some parts than expected. Sometimes it felt like they were writing for people in their field, not for the general public.

Well Done!
The photography and printing were very good, and the text was informative. After having just completed my reading of an extraordinary book on China (China: People, Place, Culture, History), it was not quite as exciting and didn’t have the breathtakingly beautiful photographs of landscapes and people. However, that was not this book’s purpose. I do believe my time was well spent in reading this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in Asian art and history.

Go See It!!
This is the best hard-cover book of the time period covered. These are amazing. Please, if you have the opportunity - go see this in person!! It was overwhelming to see the small amount of work that had been uncovered when I was there many years ago. This is even more amazing. Thank you for capturing these images for the world that cannot travel to see them in person.
