Original Album Classics

I have loved the Stranglers since their beginning in the 70's, starting with Rattus Norvegicus. Even wen they became more melodic with a Flamenco edge, the album was Feline. When the original Stranglers with the departure of Hugh Cornwell, I loved their first album, In The Night. After that, that was it for me because the music kinda dried out a bit as well as the vocals. Anyway, one of the albums in this set is Feline, the Flamenco album I had mentioned. Great great album! I particularly love Midnight Summers' Dream and a particular bonus track on this disc called "Savage Breast". It was the B side to European Female which is also on the album. Moving along to "Aural Sculpture", another fantastic album, features more horn section jazzy flavored tunes. One that stands out the most for me is "Mad Hatter" and the other is Skin Deep, both great songs and on the more melodic side is "Souls" and "Laughing". Lastly, but certainly not leastly, we have another gem known as Dreamtime. A bit more back to their rockin' punk style and a mixture of great songs. Always the Sun and You Will Always Reap What You Sow are on the slower-paced more melodic side whilst Was It You? Nice in Nice and Big In America are the singles that will wake you up. Also, I like this set because it's not just the albums themselves,but, the addition of the bonus tracks as well. For the money I paid for it, it was certainly well worth the price. If you are a Stranglers fan or finding somewhere to start, I highly recommend this set because of all the changes to their music they made.

First I give it 5 stars for this sets value and the music with the provisio that those coming to the The Stranglers need to see them as an evolving unit from their earlier sound and from album to album and in my opinion were perfectionists and are an integral part of rock and punk history especially due to their exploration abilities from raw punk but with keyboard alongside guitar,bass and drums (compared wrongly by many as the UK Doors, I see no similarities in their style or sound at all...if anything I see the Australian band Midnight Oil as the closest thing) to albums incorporating sci-fi motifs,sound effects,acoustic modes,techno,brass,joydivision/new order deadpan seriousness,while always having that great single,a cult following and ATTITUDE.This particular set of 3 CD's I picked for about $11 including shipping and what you get are the FULL ALBUMS WITH BONUS TRACKS totaling some 3 1/2 hours.Not to be confused with the 5 CD release also on Epic and an Original Album Classics(But with no bonus tracks). I chose this one due to the many bonus tracks despite the other set offering a live album and the last album 10 with it's original frontman leaving after it's release.One can call this phase 2B of their sound(phase 1,their first 3 exceptional albums,Rattus,No More Heroes,Black and White etched out in hard swirling sound, all great..followed by the creative and perhaps way ahead of it's time The Raven and futuristic MenInBlack which brings us to phase 2B with the crispy La Folie (Golden Brown) release that was released prior within the same year as the prior mentioned MIB and then these 3 CD's going further into different space pushing lush texture acoustic sounds,euro-pop with strong melody and high production standards. All of these albums were underrated with Aural considered the strongest by the critics. Each deserves it's own repeated listenings.What you don't get are extensive liner notes.You have to make do with the actual outersleeve reproductions of the originals which are faithful to the originals but makes a nice package.Of course, those new to The Stranglers should start from the beginning and those wondering about this package have my comments.I really like this group, and was listening to No More Heroes when it 1st came around and was in London the summer of 1976 and they are very sophisticated..and serious and musically with it able to experiment but stayed distinctive.

I picked up this compilation, as I only had the original lps. The sound on these cds is terrible. The treble is turned up, bass down, so that you can barely hear Brunel's bass, or the drums. Sounds like it was copied from MP3. I also have 2 compilation/greatest hits cd's (greatest hits 77-90, and Peaches, the very best of). In contrast, the greatest hits cds had well balanced and listenable sound, and are vastly superior to anything on these 3 cds. It just shows, that if they make it cheap, they have to do it somehow. Very disappointing.

Three good albums from the Stanglers at a good price. Some of their mellower music. Still good music.

発売当時も気にはなっていたけど、”Popなストラングラーズ”という批評に若かったワタシは拒絶感満載で聞くことはなかった。しかし、もう、すっかり片足をジジイ領域にいれた歳になってきたので、ものは試しに聴いてみた。ウン、こういうのもアリです。ボクにとっては、この歳になって必要になったストラン・サウンドかも。いい音楽ですよ。
