Best Tank Heater for application with deep substrate (Hermit Crabs)
I use this heater for my 50 gallon hermit crab tank. I mount it to the back of my tank instead of the bottom for maximum air heating. Use foam insulation behind it for the best results. No sticky mess with this like the other kinds. just use packing tape to mount it.

Not hot
Trash. I only bought this because all but one review was 5 stars. I left it on for 2 days to see if it just needed time to warm up, but its still only mildly warm to the touch. Definitely doesn't put any heat to the other side of the glass let alone substrate. Very weird this is the maximum heat it puts out

Ultratherm can be insulated for side mount (hermit crab tank)
Ultratherm hearing pads are great. Ultratherm and Flukers are the only brands for which it is safe to add Styrofoam for insulation, according to The Hermit Crab Association website and forum. I just purchased my second Ultratherm, for side mount on a larger hermit crab tank than I previously had. My home is 66 - 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and a Zilla heat mat of 24 watts brought my 36-gallon tank only to 73 - 75 degrees (with a smaller Ultratherm next to it). This is too cold for hermit crabs: they are huddled together as close to my first Ultratherm as they can get. I went to The Bean Farm's website because I wanted the Ultratherm 36-watt product in the 11" x 29" size, and my total price was about $41 after shipping.
