I usually enjoy the Royal Spyness novels but this had a lot of Rebecca in it, and did not seem to be entertaining. I think that the being away from the usual milieue of London or France and the Royal family and upper classes made it a lot less amusing than her other works

The latest Royal Spyness novel does a nifty riff on Daphne DuMaurier's (and even Hitchcock's film version of) Rebecca. You have the Cornish coast; a slightly daft beachcomber; a sinister and controlling housekeeper (nicknamed Manny instead of Danny); a mysteriously extinct first wife (of dubious moral quality); and a plain Jane, out of place second wife to a romantic (seeming) husband. Into this mix come the vixenish Belinda and the adventurous but more stable Georgie (now O'Mara). It's lots of fun with Bowen giving her own twist to the original story with smugglers, a little espionage, and a scandalous murder implicating Belinda. You'll keep guessing as to "whodnuit. I also love Bowen's descriptions of the mansions and the Cornish coast: evocative without being verbose. I recommend this entry in the series.

So the hint in this box is asking me how I am using this product! Well, I am perusing it page by page with my eyes which is creating thoughts and images in my brain. And it is very coherent with this author. (insert smiley of your choice)

I have not read a book in this series in a long time. I really enjoyed this one, it had likeable characters and a little mystery. I didn't like Belinda in earlier books in the series, she just seemed concerned about men and clothes. But I felt I really got to know her better in this book. She has matured and is really a good person.
