Balanced, comprehensive and insightful
Following three consecutive years of holidays in Scotland, I decided to read a history of the nation. This book does not disappoint. Oliver gives a broad overview, with sufficient detail to inform the reader of changes and developments underpinning the formation of Scotland in the 21st century. While bringing the deprivations of and injustices against the common inhabitants to the reader's attention, he offers a balanced view of the unfolding events. The book is populated with philosophers, crofters, engineers, politicians, churchmen, factory workers, business owners and warriors all interwoven with a flowing narrative linking the events of one age to the next.Scotland is treated with both love and honesty.Recommended!

Great, intense review, without being boring or too long!
Bought this for a trip to Scotland I was taking. Even though I'm a history major I only knew the bare essentials of it's history. This book was excellent! Although it started just a tad slow, he really managed to present A LOT of years of history, kings, clans, culture, and wars into a pretty brief and very readable text. Believe me, I have read a TON of really dry, long history books, this one was definitely interesting enough to keep even a "non-history" person interested. Plus, it was a great aid for the trip as I knew a lot of the background to explain to my friend. Often times the brief few sentences you get as you tour through a castle or in a pamphlet just give you very basic facts- the more you know the more interesting the country is! I would definitely recommend for anyone travelling there, it gives a true sense of the history, people, and culture of the land and as I learned on my trip, their history is definitely NOT just in their past, it is very much a part of who they still are.

Good !!!
This book is not the usual historical book, the author has an enthusiastic passionate attitude towards the history of Scotland, he adopts a particular perspective wich captivates the reader. I love it! The only criticism I make is that I think that if one has already some basic information of the history of Scotland is better in order to fully understand events. Well done! I suggest that you see also the BBC documentary presented by the author, it is really forceful!
