Great book
I got this book because I have been learning how to sketch birds, use colored pencils and water color pencil. I have no art training. I thought it would be nice to embroidery some of my sketches and as I searched on the Internet, I discovered this book. Exactly what I was thinking. I embroidered some as a teenager so had some experience with a few stitches. This book is great for a beginner. I have started out with the practice motifs first. So glad I did. Unlike knitting needles, these needles numbers are 1 for largest, 10 for smallest. I also forgot about the fabric grain needs to be correct when you put your hoop on. My first try, was puckered! The book has great instruction and I have been looking at some videos on the Internet regarding the "starting and ending off". I had always used a knot. So glad I know how to do this properly now. I also searched the Internet for storage ideas and found some good ones. (Floss-Away Bags). I also went back to craft store to get a magnifying light. The first small one I bought, OttLite, was too small, missing instructions and no light? Took it back and just got a magnifying light that hangs from my neck. It actually works good. Had 60 % off coupon. So will use this for now but will keep looking around for a better one later. It really speeds things up to see better! I can see this is very time consuming. Hopefully, I will get faster. I like to get results quickly and I can see, doing a bird is going to take lots of work and time, but I am enjoying it. Suppose that is the point anyway. Love this technique. I hope I will eventually get mine to look like the authors. Absolutely beautiful work in this book. May 20, 2016. Sketched, (juvenile marsh wren) did color pencil and then made a guide for needle painting. Need to practice, but I think I learned a bit through this project. 3/5/2017. Completed my second bird pillow and starting a third.

Amazing book to learn the technique of needle painting!
What an amazing embroidery book. I've seen Trish Burr's work on social media and have always loved how this type of embroidery looks. I'm an embroiderer, but have not mastered the needle painting aspect of it. This book shows you in great detail how to needle paint. It has different levels divided in the book, so if you've never done needle painting embroidery before, you'll learn how to. Then it goes to intermediate and then expert. Designs are included and a list of all that you need to embroider these lovely patterns.

Great class
I am an absolute beginner and this book is like having a teacher with you. Very detailed and easy to understand. Mrs. Burr lets you know that there is a previously made DVD showing the techniques used in the book. It can be purchased separately. I am a visual learner so I thought I might buy the dvd but found out that the instructions are so well written and the accompanying illustrations so detailed that the book is all I needed. Great book!

Perfect book for beginners
I had been doing some historical research on Chinese silk needle painting and became amazed at the skills. I wondered if I could learn how to do this. I bought this book after reading the reviews from others and references from embroidery teachers. As soon as it arrived I grabbed my supplies and started on the first lesson. My husband was speechless. When I completed my first flower I showed a friend who is a skilled seamstress and quilter and she said, "You learned this from a book?".I definitely recommend this to be the first book purchased by a beginner. I like the simple practice lesson which teaches you one new aspect at a time. Each project is even broken down into steps. The instructional diagrams and photos are designed so that you know exactly how to proceed. Oh, did I forget to mention that the only thing I've ever done with a needle was sew on a button or hem?

Very helpful to one new to needle painting
From what I have read so far, this book and the handbook are easy to understand. Since this is going to be a new hobby, the "painting" with thread I appreciate a more modern approach. The older books at times seem to wordy and I am easily distracted when coming across unknown words, older tools and methods. I once won a quilt in a fund raising raffle made by "The Daughters of ....", and it burned in a house fire. I had so much been hoping to learn the needle art techniques they had used on their quilt just be looking at it and trying it figure it out. This book has made me feel little better about losing that quilt after all the work the group members had put into their blocks. Thank you for sharing your expertise with others. Arrived on time & in great shape.
