Nocturnes and Barcarolles for Solo Piano (Dover Classical Piano Music)

I am learning one of the barcarolles for a piano competition in 2023.

However, it does not include Barcarolle 13 (in C Major, op. 116) nor Nocturne 13 (in B minor, op. 119). Otherwise, I am very pleased with the score.

These pieces are very nice but for the advanced pianist strictly.

Enough piano music to learn til the end of your days. Never boring. Very interesting compositions by Faure, one of my favorite composers.

Great collection, but much to one's chagrin, it excludes the composer's Nocturne No.13, Op.119, which, in my view, is the best of that entire series. Nonetheless, as stated, a fine collection, which is (as a previous reviewer correctly stated) strictly for the advanced or 'upper-intermediate' pianist.

This edition has everything I like in a piano score. A clean neat photocopy of original engravings printed on an 9.5" x 12.25" ivory paper. I wish the paper were a little heavier, like in Henle Editions, but you are not paying Henle's prices either! The lie flat binding seems very good, time will tell, and my other Dover editions, no matter their other shortcomings, hold up remarkably well.The music is astonishing. Faure's compositional style is not static and these pieces cover the development of his style from lush neo-romanticism to the 20th century's lean and linear styles. Why this music is not known as well as the music of Debussy and Ravel is a mystery to me. Faure is as distinct from Debussy and Ravel as Debussy and Ravel are distinct from each other.

Of course pianists should have this wonderful book, just don't assume it's complete. Fauré actually wrote a thirteenth Nocturne (in B minor) and a thirteenth Barcarolle (in C major), neither of which is included here. Both of these are characteristic late Fauré, but the Nocturne #13 is particularly not to be missed. I was just playing it over tonight and was amazed by the dark drama of the music. It's as Fauré's biographer Jessica Duchen said, that it seems to stare death in the face.Both the Nocturne #13 and the suave, tranquil Barcarolle #13 are available individually from Masters Music Publications, and I would suggest that pianists supplement this book with both of those works to make a complete set of Fauré's nocturnes and barcarolles.
