Digitally re-mastered edition of the 1979 debut album from the British Pop/Ska band. While One Step Beyond may have been one of the biggest selling albums released during the Ska/2-Tone craze of 1979-1980, the album still sounds fresh and exciting three decades after it's original release. There are many Ska influences on the album, but the band dabbles in all sorts of musical genres on One Step Beyond, creating their own unique brand of Pop. Salvo.

2023 remaster
The sonics on this disc are superb. I’ve compared this sonics to the 2000 remaster and the 35th anniversary release, and both are inferior to this 2023 edition. The clarity of the instruments and voices make this a worthwhile purchase.

"The Rockingest, Rock-Steady Beat ... of Madness!"
Madness was a lot of American's introduction to British Ska music, back in the early 80s, and 'One Step Beyond' is a fine introduction to real Ska - steady-beat British/Jamaican club dance music. Madness brings fun, creative and high-energy style here, including the classic track 'Night Boat to Cairo,' and my personal favorite 'Swan Lake' - with a dirty-sax lead that I imagine would have Tchaikovsy laughing out loud. 'One Step Beyond' was the group's first album, and is entirely different to their later soft-pop material, such as 'Our House'; it is pure Ska, without the punk-rock harshness that the genre sometimes picks up. This disc is the 2010 re-release, digitally remastered from the 1979 version. Back in the day, I had the original album on vinyl LP - and this remastered CD sounds a whole lot better!

Great seller support.
The customer service was excellent. The original was damaged, either poor manufacturing or shipping damage. I reached out to the seller, they promptly sent out a new one. Extremely happy with the service.Yes, the album sounds good. Everything is as it should be.Very pleased.

Don’t watch that, watch this
A ska classic. Forget the pop cheese these guys are famous for and hop on this bandwagon. All the aggression and impact of the two-tone era, but with some real bangers.Half the tracks are balls-to-the-wall ska, the other half on the britpop side of things.A surprisingly fantastic album.Five stars.

Probably my all time favorite ska album- the crowning jewel of the British ska ...
Probably my all time favorite ska album- the crowning jewel of the British ska revival. It's probably not as culturally significant as the first Specials album, but it is even more enjoyable.

One Step Beyond Again
This is review of the 2023 re-release of the deluxe 2CD version of One Step Beyond.Madness fans are very fortunate that the vast majority of the band's back catalogue is still readily available on physical media. During 2023, it appears that all of studio albums will get the reissue treatment. One Step Beyond follows the same format as the recent Absolutely release with both CDs housed in a cardboard case. The original vinyl album artwork has been nicely recreated for this release and I'm pleased to say that silly letters and numbers that plagued the last reissue campaign have been dropped.I'm not going to go into an in-depth review of the music on this release, as we all know it's a fantastic debut album. The only track on CD 1 I dislike is 'Chipmunks Are Go!', but looking at the brilliant new liner notes from the band, I'm not alone in this opinion.CD2 comprises of the b-sides from this era, tracks from the 'Work Rest and Play' EP, live radio recordings and the Madness tracks from the Dance Craze release. All in all you get 33 tracks, which isn't bad for the current price of under £10.The tracks appear to be the exact same remasters as featured in the 2009 release. The main limitation of this 2023 release is that the none of the demos from the 35 year anniversary release from 2014 have been included. It's also worth noting that the 'cd rom' promo videos are no longer included. As mentioned earlier, the liner notes are completely new for this CD release. The Irvine Welsh essay and lyrics from the 2009 version are no more, and have been replaced with insight from Chrissy Boy, Woody, Bedders and Mike Barson. If you've bought any of the recent vinyl reissues you'll be familiar with the formula. (I'm 99% certain that these liner notes have not been released previously as I don't think OSB has been reissued as part of the 2021/2022 vinyl reissue campaign.) As usual, the insight from the band is priceless and is far more interesting than anything we seen before on a One Step Beyond release. All in all this is a decent reissue and is a must buy for new fans of the band. For long term fans who've witnessed at least 5 previous CD reissues in the last 25 years alone, the liner notes are the only new offering.
