Are your students disengaged in your algebra or math lessons? Do you get questions like “When will I ever need this?” or “Why are we learning this?” Are you looking for engaging activities and lesson plans aligned to the Common Core State Standards? Algebra in the Real World DVD can help! This DVD makes algebra and mathematics come alive in a way that is relevant to middle and high school students. 18 videos on this DVD show your students that math is relevant in careers today and not “boring”, “stuffy” careers that they might imagine. Videos showcase careers such as sports reporter, skateboard designer, windsurf sail designer/tester, and rollercoaster engineer etc. Each video has an accompanying lesson plan that requires the students to perform tasks similar to those discussed in the corresponding movie. Each lesson plan includes teacher directions for easy implementation. The videos are sorted by both topic and Common Core State Standards. If you need an activity to go with your lesson on functions simply choose one of the 18 videos under the functions category in the lesson plan guide. The videos cover topics such as acceleration, linear functions, slope, equations, variables, and much more. If you need an activity for a certain standard, choose one listed under that standard in the guide. CCSS that are covered range from sixth grade all the way through the high school standards, so there is something for every grade level on this disc! Stop spending hours searching for STEM lessons and lesson plans aligned to the standards you are teaching. Teachers, parents, tutors and homeschoolers start getting your students excited about math and thinking about how they might use math in their future career paths. A great way to excite and engage students! Product includes 67 page downloadable PDF Curriculum Guide. Link to download the PDF is on the back cover of the DVD or download from http://tinyurl.com/jkm9xym .

Good supplement for first year Algebra
Each of the videos are about 2 minutes and are of interesting topics for kids. I plan to use it for my 7th grader who is starting Algebra this year. I hope The Futures Channel puts more sets of videos like this together.

Not worth the money.
Not all of the videos mentioned the connection of the career with math. Some videos are bad visual quality.

Good for Middle School
Most of the topics covered seemed geared towards a middle school curriculum. The videos are short but interesting. The lesson plans that go with the DVD are really helpful. Topics include volume, area, averages, linear equations. among others. There are many lessons included that require students to collect data and analyze it. The website with the lessons is on a sticker on the shrink wrap so it's easy to accidentally throw it away.

Code is on Packaging
I found the videos interesting and a good jumping off point for mathematical discourse. As was stated in another review, be very careful, the code for the print materials in on a sticker on the wrapping of the video. It would be much better if the sticker was put on the inside of the case. I received a discount to provide an fair and unbiased review.
