THIS AUTHOR HAS THE SMARTS AND LOVES HER SUBJECT!!
We would get along just fine. Our oldest cat is 13 and can shake hands to earn his treats. He waves his left paw or uses his right paw to tap my arm to tell me he wants to shake. I taught him to shake, but he figured out the rest on his own.One Eyed Willie came from the Humane Society. I did my best to try to teach him to shake. Then one day he just head butted my shoulder. I told him," I know what you want!", and began reinforcing that motion with two kitty treats. But now Willie taps my arm. I didn't teach him that.As the author says, cats can be trained. They can be taught specific words or phrases. My cats know that 'Up' means get up. You should see how quickly they jump from my lap. My problem is getting my husband to use words the cats understand, like: No, You've already had one, Bedtime or Wait a minute. (Don't use that last one unless you really mean 60 seconds or less.)This author has explained why Tulei likes to lick the plastic bags I pop in every small trash can in the house. I would never have known! Now I know why Willie doesn't cover what he's done in the litter box. If we weren't so far out in the country it would be easy to potty train him. ( No, we do not have an outhouse! Use your brain!)The author solves many problems we've had in our 37 year marriage: poor Leo had kidney stones, but lots of people in western KY do, too. It's all the limestone that leeches into the water. Leo had some drastic surgery.Willie was shown the litter box when he first arrived, but we found his droppings in the kindling box. No one at the Humane Society said a thing about litter box troubles.I waited till Tulei had left no question about the reason for the boxes in our laundry room, then put Willie in and every time he jumped out, I put him back until I saw his nose go down for a real investigation. Wow!! Talk about lights coming on. Willie was two at the time and it was probably the first time in his life he understood the use of a litter box.Although I didn't know this book was in the works six years ago, I followed a few and violated a few of the guidelines the author gives for training new kittens. Of course, Willie wasn't a new kitten. He needed to give up his outdoor style of living.I've learned more about cats in reading this book than I have in a lifetime of owning cats, and I'm 59 years old!I read once that cats only use the Meow sound while conversing with humans. Maybe that's why I love to hear Tulei announce his presence with a trill or hear Willie's questioning 'Grff' as he moves from the shoulder of my chair down to my lap-almost like he's asking permission. These two are speaking to me in their language. I've been accepted by nature's most regal, silly, fun-loving, lap warming creatures. I'm owned by cats.Wonder what my dogs would think if they knew?

The owner's manual for your cat
This compact, readable book is the owner's manual for your cat. Arden Moore is a life-long cat lover and the editor of the excellent _Catnip_ newsletter. She combines her feelings for cats and her technical expertise in this book. The focus of the book is on behavior-related issues that can cause cat owners-- and, of course, cats-- major problems if they are not appropriately dealt with. As the author points out, cats are not only mysterious, they are masters at concealing their true states of being and at manipulating the humans around them. This means that a cat can be having serious-- even life-threatening-- problems without exhibiting any signs that might indicate what's happening. The book is arranged very clearly as sets of questions and answers that deal with all aspects of cat ownership and care, including feeding, litter box issues, healthy care, appropriate toys, etc. Many answers deal with safe and effective ways to break cats of habits that are natural to them, but annoying or destructive to us.The book's organization makes it possible to read cover to cover, to search for specific information, or to simply browse. The tone is just right: technical enough to be informative and authoritative, yet informal enough to avoid being intimidating. This is a book for cat owners who want to make sure that their cats are healthy and happy-- and that that they aren't driven crazy by their cat's behavior. I recommend it most highly.

So much insight that I had never considered!
Yes, it is hard to say that a book has the answers for everything, so I can only say that it had answers to our problems. I moved my cat into a new house, where I thought the laundry room in the finished basement would be the best place for the litter box. Well, he (the cat) has been trying to tell me for weeks now (by pooping on the carpet, that is) that he doesn't like it there, and thanks to the good help of this book, I can now regain some sanity in our new house! As a fairly new cat owner, the book helped me figure out that I should move the box to a new location and probably add a second box on the upstairs level. Problem fixed! In addition to that, the book was entertaining and I read it from cover to cover, just to make sure I wasn't missing any other signs! Highly recommended.

i was so confused
This was my second amazon purchase, a decade ago. I had just passed the bar, started working at a law firm, got married and last but definitely not least i adopted a little boy bengal cat, a thing i immediately questioned! instead of going online or to the vet or breeder like i'd do now, i guess i felt a book was necessary. i still have that little boy and he is aging like all of us. i found the book to be helpful, and cute.

Not many answers.
Disappointing - not much here I didn't know already and rather dumbed down for me. I'm new to cat ownership so expected to get some answers to puzzling aspects of my cat's behaviour. A rather 'lightweight' book.
