Relieved that it was better than I hoped for
Our entire family are fans of Penn and Teller and my older son (11 years old) has been into magic, learning tricks he finds on You Tube. I purchased a magic set for him in the past but it was cheap and ended up just being a collection of cheap plastic clutter he didn't get much use of. For Christmas, I wanted to get him a better magic set and the Penn & Teller set seemed the obvious choice, but when I looked at the pictures, it seemed like another cheap set. After reading enough good reviews, I decided to get it. I'm glad I did.He got it on X-mas eve when my side of the family gets together at my home and it is the only present he played with. He locked himself in the TV room downstairs learning tricks. What blew me away is that from the very first trick, he was wowing family members. I expected, at best, some nice tricks that he would enjoy but nothing that would actually trick or entertain the adults. If you have folks that don't know much about magic tricks, you kid can actually learn how to do some fine illusions with this set. Even the more obvious one like the paper to money printer are lots of fun to watch. Now, MOST of the tricks are going to be card tricks or variations on main tricks. The DVD will only cover the smaller number of main tricks that use the props that come in the package. The rest you need to read the booklet. One disappointment is that they didn't include a deck of cards to do the card tricks. I wouldn't think it would cost that much more to throw in a deck of cards. Seems like they would want to include a "Penn & Teller" deck of cards just for the marketing. While I might normally take off a star for that, I'm too happy with the results of the gift. I think anyone with a budding magician in the family will find this to be an excellent introductory set. Even adults can have fun with the set.

Husband squealed like a schoolgirl…he’s almost 40
My husband is a huge Penn and Teller fan. I surprised him with this and he legitimately squealed like a little girl. He and my daughter like to figure out the tricks together. As far as the tricks go, they’re standard beginner magic tricks, but branded with Penn and Teller. The family has fun.

Not bad, but a few problems
I bought this for my Granddaughter after she fell in love with the P&T TV show. Overall, it's not a bad magic kit.Pros:- It's manufactured by Royal Magic, who have been around forever and produce quality, durable products. I've bought many of their tricks since I was around 12 years old and just getting started with magic (I'm 58 now). I still have all of them, and even after all that time they still work perfectly.- Although the props and gimmicks included are well constructed, they're run-of-the-mill tricks that many people have no doubt seen before. I guess that's okay for someone within the target age group, as it's fun to watch them performing the tricks and the kick they get out of it when they put on a little show for people.Cons:- It's a bit pricey, considering what's included.- The tricks on the DVD are not performed by Penn and Teller. It appears they simply rubber stamped this kit with their names in order to make it sell better.- There's no way anyone 8 years old could make heads or tails of the card trick book. Unless you have an extremely smart kid, it's worthless for the age group the kit was designed for without a lot of help.- I don't see the cardboard tricks that used to come with this kit here, so I'm not sure if they're still even still included. Many of the instructions for them were incorrect, and there were a few that didn't work at all. I wrote Royal Magic about this, who promptly answered and assured me it would be taken care of in future versions of the kit. I was sort of expecting them to send me a different trick or two for compensation in my taking the time to fiddle around with them and report the problems, so at least future customers wouldn't have to go through the frustration in trying to get them to work, but no dice. Since it appears they're not included anymore, they may have just "fixed" the problem by excluding them now. No great loss, they wouldn't have lasted long anyway.

Great kit with a great DVD, just try to find it on sale or used.
First off, it DOES NOT have a deck of playing cards, despite having a book on card tricks. Not a deal breaker, just know you'll have to supply your own. It's a a great kit, and the DVD with Penn & Teller showing you how to do the tricks is an fantastic addition. If you're a fan of their's, don't expect the DVD to be full of banter, jokes or other aspects of the duo you'd see in their shows. It really is just an instructional DVD with very few jokes. But still very informative and shows you how to do each trick better than any book can. And if you're worried about them being crude or vulgar (like in their shows) in front of your kids, don't. They are 100% kid friendly here. These tricks are rather inexpensive, so the kit might seem overpriced, but if you think your child might have trouble, the DVD is an invaluable tool. Still, try to find it on sale.

Be careful with the wand!
Overall a fun kit. I bought it for my five year old who thinks he can just tap a deck of cards and make something happen, so he’s super easy to impress. I, however, was not impressed with the wand because both ends have a brittle plastic plug that chipped and left sharp edges (I’m sure it will chip more and eventually render it useless). I called and they said they tried to warn customers not to snap the ends, however I didn’t find that warning. They gladly sent me a replacement anyway. One thing I would suggest for future kits is possibly quality over quantity. The cardboard tricks, although great for learning, do not stand up to repeated use by kids. I’d rather see One more quality trick than all the cardboard combined.

Big hit w 11 year old nephew
My nephew enjoyed this kit and he is pretty into magic (teaches himself tricks off youtube). What he needs to emphasize more is the art of patter/ distraction. And how to organize all the bits so he doesn’t lose them all. We used an old briefcase to create a magic setup and used drawstring bags for each setup. Next is how to pull them out so his audience doesn’t see how the trick works (the stuff that “goes up his sleeve” so to speak.
