The Texas drawl of Jim Rutledge and the band's crushing guitar and organ riffs combined to make Bloodrock a standout among the proto-metal groups to emerge as the '70s approached. Their 1969 debut is a certified hard-rock cult classic: Double Cross; Timepiece; Wicked Truth; Fatback, and more!

A GUILTY Pleasure From The Past!
Man, what GREAT music came out at this time, this is typical of the types of bands folks from my era used to trip hard on back in the day, nobody told anybody what or how to do what they did, kind of musical fun house in a way, people just wailed, and what fun it was to take a lid, roll it up, pack up the Boone's Farm and rock out at places like Long Beach Arena or the Forum back in the day, nobody hassled you, and bands like this provided the soundtrack of many a great night out, and for less than a few drinks cost now, I saw bands like this on bills with bands like Grand Funk or Humble Pie for five or six bucks, for $20.00 you could get a great seat, and trip hard for the night, I tell kinds that now and they freak out, yes, I saw bands like Zep and the Doors for what a big Mac goes for today, and this platter is kinda like a big Mac, a guilty pleasure of indulgence, some truly nut job playing, great singing and anarchic vibe, this is how we ROLLED back in the day, sorry if you weren't there to see/hear it, if you WERE, you KNOW what I'm talking about, and this brings back so many great vibes and STILL stands tall on it's OWN merit even today, so all I can say is that bans like BLOODROCK are like a doorway into a vanished era, glad I was there to experience it firsthand, just as glad to dig it all again NOW!!

BLACK + PURPLE + BLOOD = ROCK
Many rock historians would point to 1970 as the year that heavy metal was officially born with the releases of BLACK SABBATH - PARANOID and DEEP PURPLE - IN ROCK, both of which are all-time classics of the genre, being cited as proof. Far fewer would add BLOODROCK'S eponymous debut of the same year into the conversation and it is an oversight that is in major need of correction. This BLOODROCK offering doesn't blow the speakers from start to finish like releases by AC/DC and JUDAS PRIEST just a few years later would but neither do PARANOID and IN ROCK. PLANET CARAVAN is as hippy dippy trippy as anything by the JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and IN ROCK has enough quiet organ passages to keep it from being an all out metal monster like the first MONTROSE offering in 1973. Listen closely to TIMEPIECE and FANTASTIC PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE and you will hear anything as doom and gloomy as Geezer Butler ever conjured up in his darkest moods. In the riff category, the jawbreaking main one in MELVIN LAID AN EGG is as heavy as anything Tony Iommi ever came up with. In addition, the production values on this release are very high making for a great listen.

The Best
FANTASTIC PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE is a song that never fails to move me, but I cry every time I watch Sing A Song Of Six Pants by The 3 Stooges, so make of that what you will. Buy this album if for no other reason than to validate my existence!Really? Honestly? This is a great album, and the aforementioned song is one of my all-time favorites. I can't possibly explain why, but it just is. And GOTTA FIND A WAY is infinitely cool, if only for the way the guitar alternates two notes for 6-minutes plus but never gets boring.BLOODROCK was one of the most unjustly underated bands ever. They deserved better, and you deserve this album. Go ahead - treat yourself. Buy it.

TEXAS LEGENDS!
Dark, heavy, groovy, jazzy, hard rockin' with a touch of organ and GREAT vocalist. This band is for fans of Deep Purple, Grand Funk, and Black Sabbath. Lee Pickens does a killer job on the guitar. His style if fierce with a touch of jazz. Drummer/Vocalist Rutledge is amazing! He has a great voice for rock, yet smoother when needed. One of America'a first wave of heavy metal.

A lesser known not so good 70's rock band
This album is a little bit weird it is not as good as most of the bigger rock bands of the time. Perhaps the unusual quality of the band is what will endear it to the listener but for me it wasn't the right kind of unusual. The Vocals are a bit off and the general sound is kind of just unappealing. However on the good side, The music is well plays and band are good musicians I just don't think it is really for me. Not the best but not the worst band ever and it was cheap so I am pleased it is in my collection of cds it is a lesser known older band. It just lacks something I can't put my finger on it though perhaps a catchy tune or a melody perhaps

Bloodrock sounds really rough however they are a rock band with a refined side to them
I found this somewhat dated but seeing as this was made in the late 60's or early 70's there is a very good reason for that dated sound. There is also a looseness to the band's sound, it is almost like they did not practise enough together before hitting the studio to record this LP. I am not saying that the band lack cohesion only that there is some air between the various pieces. Now whether this is the part of the Engineer or Producer or the band themselves I simply do not know. I hear this a great deal from bands recorded in this time period so it very well may be a production factor from this era. This does not deter from the character of the various artists or from the overall greatness of the album it is a nice piece and deserves a place in anyone's collection. I notice that as they continue on as a band this seems to disappear. Spigomars

blood in hell
