Why does the package say that, "This product contains a chemical known to the state of CA to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm?"

The warning is due to California's Proposition 65 law that negatively affects thousands of California businesses. Nothing is added to our products and the warning has nothing to do with the packaging. The law accounts for naturally-occurring trace amounts of metal minerals such as cadmium and lead which are present in a wide variety of natural foods due to the soil in which foods are grown or the natural presence in the foods themselves. These cannot be removed and are in every-day foods that you regularly consume, such as spinach, rice, and many other common vegetables.

Just as plants pull up minerals we do need, such as iron, zinc, and copper, they also pull up things we do not need, such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic. In our case, these things are not the result of man-made pollution or pesticides, but have been present in soils in every part of the world since the beginning of time, so they are unavoidable. Unfortunately, the law does not distinguish between industrial free lead, such as from lead paint and which is very dangerous, and organically-plant-bound lead, the type found in soils and which most peoples' bodies can effectively eliminate.

California companies are faced with unique challenges due to this very strict law that affects only our state and no other state in the country. Prop 65 warnings are so ubiquitous in California that they are everywhere and on virtually everything, from gas stations to coffee shops, and on thousands of products shipped into California, such as cell phones, screws, furniture, utensils, etc.. Most Californians do not even pay attention to the warning anymore.

Dear Customer, Sunfood Raw Cacao Powder is sourced from the country of Peru and contains 11 grams of fat per 2 Tablespoon (28g) serving. Our cacao powder is made from only the finest variety of certified organic cacao beans, which have never been genetically modified. Our cold-pressing process first removes the majority of the oils and fat content of the cacao, allowing us to then grind it down to create a fine, richly flavored, easy to use powder. Through this low temperature process, we are able to preserve the delicate nutrients and true, natural taste of raw cacao. Due to our low temperature process, less oils are removed during the pressing of the cacao, leaving a higher fat content in the powder.
