A great introduction to conservation
Despite being written in 1979 this book is still relevant today. I bought it to read to my children (8 and 6) as I know I enjoyed it at 11 reading to myself. I didn’t remember much about it, but my son (who is an avid reader) has taken a key interest in British Wildlife after reading and listening to this. It has sparked many discussions about the environment and state of play today. It’s a lovely story of teamwork and friendship in the face of adversity, even if you aren’t interested in the wider context. The language can be complex (for so young), but they were interested enough for me to explain new words along the way. For slightly older children it should be fine.

Gripping.
I vaguely remembered this from my childhood and when I wanted to buy my son a new book I was drawn towards this. We have been reading it to each other and we are hooked. We have barely been able to put it down.Every chapter has you wondering what is going to happen next. Will the animals be OK? Will they all make it? It had him researching about British wildlife and has opened his eyes to how damaging the human race has been. This is on his I must recommend to everyone list.I terms of this particular edition it is great quality. The print size is good that it isn't too daunting. There are little images on each new chapter of the animals too which he loves. We can't wait to start book 2.

As good as I remember
Re-reading after about 30 years. Still as wonderful as I remembered. Passing it on to my granddaughter aged 9. Loved the extras at the end of the book.

A great book to read out loud!
Able to use a variety of ‘voices’ for the different animals / birds and good that they are just called ‘badger’, ‘fox’ which keep the story about ‘animals’. Read this to grandsons, 6 & 8, and they have loved “listen with Grandpa” over FaceTime. It has kept us in daily touch with each other which is so important in the pres3nt lockdown situation. Highly recommend this series.
