His Majesty’s Dragon takes place in a world like ours. It pretty much is our world. With the slight difference that there are actual dragons living on our planet. And people learned to tame an ride those animals. For many countries dragons are the Aerial Corps, thus they engage in war. There are many references to the history of our world, like the Napoleonic Wars. Yet those take a slightly different turn because of the dragons and their significance to warfare.In this world we meet Temeraire, a dragon like no other. He and his handler Laurence set out to train for the battle that is most certainly to come. It will determine the future of the British Empire. Will those two be ready for it when the time comes?I enjoyed this book so much. The characters are fantastic. There are different dragon types with different abilities and disadvantages. Temeraire is neither the biggest nor the fastest dragon we meet. Instead he shines when it comes to intelligence. But that’s not always an advantage in the military.Laurence, on the other hand, does have a military background and is well accustomed to these procedures and such a lifestyle. So he has his own problems to overcome when he becomes Temeraire’s handler. Sometimes that’s just hilarious to watch.It’s really great to see those two interact with one another and their environment. Both their worlds are turned upside down and they have to come to terms with new situations, unpleasant people and orders they might not like. In the end this book is about friendship, loyalty and finding your place in society.

Man stelle sich vor, zu Napoleons Zeiten hätte es nicht nur Armee und Marine gegeben, sondern auch noch eine aus Drachengeschwadern bestehende Luftflotte! Welch eine grandiose, originelle Idee - und dann auch noch brillant umgesetzt: Marine-Kapitän Laurence wird unfreiwillig der Partner des gerade geschlüpften Drachen Temeraire, muss deshalb auf seine angesehende Marine-Laufbahn verzichten und wird zum verachteten Drachengeschwader abkommandiert, wo alles anders ist - und wo sogar Frauen dienen, nämlich als Captains ihrer Drachen!Die Ideen im Buch sind bestechend und unglaublich clever in die "echte" Geschichte mit ihren historischen Gestalten integriert. Die Autorin zeigt sprachliche Meisterschaft - der Sprachduktus der damaligen Zeit kommt herrlich amüsant rüber, v.a. wenn der steif-formelle Laurence mit der saloppen Ausdrucksweise des Drachengeschwaders konfrontiert wird - oder wenn der wissensdurstige Temeraire Fragen stellt, die Laurence arg in Bedrängnis bringen...Die Protagonisten sind überzeugend, besonders Laurence und Temeraire sind höchst gelungen. Die Handlung ist unterhaltsam und spannend und schwächelt nur in der Mitte ein wenig, aber davon erholt sich der Roman schlagartig: Novik bietet ihren Lesern am Ende des Buchs einen wirklich umwerfenden militärischen Schachzug Napoleons!Trotz der leichten Schwäche in der Mitte ein Must-Read! Besonders zu empfehlen im englischen Original. Viereinhalb Sterne, aufgrund der Originalität der Story aufgerundet auf 5.Übrigens: Der Nachfolgeband "Throne of Jade" ist so gut, dass ich ihn überhaupt nicht mehr aus der Hand legen konnte :-)

Another trilogy about dragons - and situated around the Napoleonic wars - I was very sceptical and hesiated long to buy the book. My surprise was a very pleasant one; I would not have believed it possible that a mixture of "Dragonriders of Pern" and "Master and Commander" could be so enjoyable and the blend of the two genres so seamless and inspired. I wasn'much surprised to read that Novik is fond of Patrick o'Brians work; it shows...Few authors can keep up with his standards, but Novik has proven she is one of them.She creates a historical fiction with such accuracy that it is hard to remember that dragons are not part of the real thing and you can't read about them in a history book. Even details like the difficulties with the admiralty or the structural adaptions of ships in order to bear dragons are impossibly real. Questions of the longevity of dragons and the selection of according captains are answered succinctly also. Go on, read it yourself...

Ich liebe diese Bücherreihe, und kann sie nicht genug empfehlen. Naomi Novik's Schreibstil ist wundervoll und mitreißend, die Charaktere sind liebenswert und einzigartig, und Temeraire selbst ist der beste Drache den die Literatur jemals hervorgebracht hat. Danke, Novik!
