We Fought the Road

Overlooked slice of History during WWII that needs to be shared!
Excellent read about a time and place in history I had not ventured before. It left me wanting to explore more about the Alaskan Highway and the extreme terrain and climate these hardy souls found themselves in during WWII. Well written and thoughtful approach made this an easy, informative and enjoyable read about experiences that were far from it! It left a sense of amazement at what these men went through to accomplish a seemingly impossible task, not just physically, but with all the racial tension most of the men actually working faced. The writers personal take, with excerpts from their fathers letters, lent a personal touch to a very gritty historical period. Humor throughout was evident and elevated in all the right places. Books that can enlighten you to new things are always a win. Buy it, read it, share it.

Building a Road to Alaska as a part of the US War Effort in World 2
An interesting, easy to read book about a major US army project during World War 2. One feature I enjoyed is following the construction story through the eyes of a First Lieutenant in the US Army, as he writes home to his special girl. The story also covers the issue of segregation and discrimination in the US Army, as most of the construction work for the Alaska Highway was done by Black Soldiers. This book is highly recommended.

Highly Recommended...You will learn a piece of black history that has gone untold and the challenges of the ALCAN highway!
The authors captured the scenes of the fight and plight of the black soldiers who were at the heart of building this treacherous ALCAN highway project in the worst imaginable conditions. And among the worst being the racism that permeated the white officers who commanded them. Christine and Dennis McClure did a masterful job of weaving the story of racism, the dignity of the black soldiers, the 3 cent love affair and the commitment Americans made after Pearl Harbor. Using the personal letters, added so much to the in depth history to put the reader in scenes. I am so pleased, I now know this piece of history from this well told book. Highly recommended!
