It works.
(I was surprised that the book did not have a much higher average review rating. It looks like the bad reviews are for the kindle version where the devanagari does not load properly. I have the hard copy.)Learning a language is obviously hard and cumbersome. There is no easy way. But this book does take one through the least difficult path. There is a good balance between formal and informal, grammar and vocabulary, and a good pace of ramp-up. I highly recommend it.I wish I had gotten the version with CD though. I only have the book. So I am not sure how good the CD is.A great complimentary tool to consider for grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking practice is Pimsleur. The 60 30min classes in Pimsleur does not get you as far as this book. But they complement really well. And having two sources make it more fun as they reaffirm each other.

Useful and well-organized, but dry
I've been using this book in my Beginning Hindi class. It's very well-organized. Each unit gives a dialogue between two family members. Each dialogue is very thoughtfully constructed: they show real everyday conversations (from "Rishi, have you seen my glasses?" to "Is Suhas *just* your friend?"), and slowly introduce new vocabulary and grammatical concepts. The vocabulary are listed in each chapter and in a dictionary at the back, and useful grammar examples show how each new rule works for different tenses and genders. However, there is little for a student to do here except learn, understand, and memorise the dialogues. It's a bit dry, and serious students will have to find lots of supplementary materials if they want to see more than four example sentences for each concept - ie, if they want to actually speak Hindi, instead of just memorizing the grammar rules. I love to learn languages, but without the class, I'd give up out of boredom before I hit chapter 3.

Can't imagine a better language textbook
I had to buy this for my Hindi class in college, but it's a wonderful book on its own. The "dialogues" in Hindi are always amusing and the grammar/vocab/alphabet concepts are made very approachable.

I don't have this newer 2015 version but I can attest that the earlier one is excellent. But if you're trying to choose a 'learn ...
In case you're wondering (as I was), the content of this book is exactly the same as this: https://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Hindi-Complete-Language/dp/034086687X/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8 - which is also for sale on Amazon. I don't have this newer 2015 version but I can attest that the earlier one is excellent. But if you're trying to choose a 'learn Hindi' book, just be aware that these are actually the same book!

Hindi komplett !
Das Buch beschreibt die Grammatik in allen Nuancen. Lektionstexte mit Übersetzungen und Übungen mit Lösungen machen es jedem möglich, in seiner Weise zu lernen. Auch die dort angegeben Links wie die Videos "A Door Into Hindi" machen das Lernen sehr lebendig.

Very recommendable
I like a lot this textbook which I buy again only in online version, because it explains in depth every single detail about the Hindi grammar and phonetics, which for me is the most difficult part of learning this language in particular. The beginning stage of reading and writing goes slow in my case but it’s worth to dedicate more time to it, as is the base upon which the student will build the rest of his knowledge.I would recommend to get a notebook from which you can see and the syllabus, because in the textbook they are very tiny and you can miss a detail if you are not previously familiar with them. My opinion is based on the physical textbook, not on the online version of the same book.I would definitely recommend the textbook to everyone who is serious in learning the language in depth.
