The 2011 vintage was one of the coolest in recent years. A late 2010 freeze damaged vineyards through¬out the Columbia Valley reducing crop loads by 20%. Much like 2010, a cool spring delayed bud break and flowering and created mildew issues in some vineyards. However, a warm and dry August and September helped grapes ripen later than normal. Near perfect October weather allowed grapes to hang on their vines longer, leading to more balanced sugars and acid in many varietals.
