Kato Unitrack is of the highest quality available as far as combined track / roadbed options go, the connections are solid and tight and provide excellent conductivity. If one wanted a temporary setup for a Christmas display, or a smaller layout ect, I would highly recommend spending extra for the Kato products. A medium to large layout with a lot of switching action built exclusively with Kato will quickly get expensive however, I have found, after purchasing over $1000 worth of Kato #6 elec turnouts, that Atlas, and Im certain all other code 83 ho track / switches will easily mate with the Kato Unitrack by removing the plastic snap in Kato track connector and using regular rail connectors. The connections will require a shim under the non-Kato accessory to make up for the roadbed thickness and will not lock together as securely as the Kato assembly, but depending on the number of switches your layout requires, a little extra work could save hundreds to be spent on, well, many options. The great many options available for every aspect of model railroading today are absolutely mind boggling so if you are just beginning, take some time to educate yourself and find a way to become familiar with the hobby before spending $. Ohh if only I could start from scratch 🙄 Cheers!

I really love this track. I have a whole bunch of Atlas track, enough to do a descent size layout (which I have yet to do). I had been apprehensive to switch to Kato because it meant starting over collecting what I needed. Plus the cost seemed high. I pulled the trigger last Christmas, and I'm very pleased that I did. The track is very solid and looks great. It easily snaps together and stays securely connected, which works great if you just want to throw something together on a low pile carpet. It's easy to quickly switch your ideas around when you change your mind. Whether you're doing a permanent layout, or a temporary one, you can't go wrong with Kato.
