Ascension: Apprentice Edition Game

i started with the app and wanted the actual board game. I figured my wife is the only person I could probably get to play it so i got the apprentice version. Even though its like half the game as chronicles of the godslayer, it plays really well with two people. I saved like $30.For those who have no idea what this is, it's a great easy game to learn with a decent amount of strategy but definitely has an element of luck. deckbuilding is part of the gameplay so its not a trading card game where you collect your deck before hand in order to start a game. This really does have everything for two people.It takes less than 2 minutes to set up. There are tokens, cards, and a paper mat. You can play it anywhere, and its super easy to take with you. My wife and I usually take about 30 minutes to finish a game. I love complex, heavy strategy, deep, long board games. My wife likes simple 20 minute light strategy board games. We both love it. My wife just wished it was a different theme, something less fantasy.

Can't beat this for value. It makes me wish every CCG had a stripped-down $5 version that had just enough in it for a solid introduction. Cards are great quality and compatible with Ascension's, with the only difference being that some cards in this Apprentice Edition have colored borders to make them more distinguishable. The paper mat's all right, but having to utterly unfold it to read the rules is a minor annoyance. The score tokens are good and generic enough in look to warrant using them for other games (a selling point to me).The game is a bit narrow in scope, tending to reward one strategy over the rest. And there's only one monster, the Cultist. I'm not sure which expansions would best address these issues, but even played as-is, you'll get dozens of games out of it before it starts to feel samey. So it's done well to serve its purpose: introducing my group and I to Ascension. Quite fun and well worth it.Overall, I recommend it!

My wife and I had started to play Ascension on our phones after hearing about it from a friend. We both enjoyed the digital game and thought this would be a low investment way of trying out the actual card game. We have a variety of games in the house and this one was extremely cheap compared to what we are usually expecting to pay for a functional two player game. It arrived quick and I was impressed by how little space it took up. The paper tokens aren't anything special and instructions are useful, but not anything to treasure, which is to be expected at that price point. The mechanics contained in this set of cards keeps play fairly simple and we were up and running very quickly. Ascension plays with a very good combo of luck of the draw, smart decision making and knowledge of what cards are available and their interactions. Thus experienced players will have some advantage, yet new players won't be left far behind. Since then we've bought more sets of Ascension but have decided to keep this set separate as a portable version we can easily take with us to the coffee shop or on an outing. I would highly recommend it as low investment into a great card game.

I love this game and the 2 person edition is perfect because it is very rare for me to have another friend over who wants to play it. My wife loves it because in this edition there is not a lot of effecting other players type cards. You just do your own thing. The board is a nice touch but sadly it is very flimsy but that was to be expected from a paper fold out. A lot of unique cards that are also not in the base set!

I have Ascension for the iPad and wanted to teach my family how to play the card version, which is of course more interactive. This set is perfect for that, and terrific value here for 12 dollars shipped free with Amazon prime! Ascension Apprentice Edition comes with enough cards and honor tokens to play a full game with 2 players. The cards are high quality with great artwork, and even the honor tokens are good quality (cardboard, but very thick). The game mat is excellent for teaching new players. And it's portable, everything fits into a small package that you can bring with you anywhere. It's basically a "teaching" edition of this fantastic deck builder but also a portable edition. Highly recommended!!

I bought this for about $5 as a 2 player game with similar qualities to Dominion. For that, it has been great. The problem is that there's little longevity in my opinion. I've played 2 games with my girlfriend and we've seen all of the cards and it feels like there's little variety to keep the game exciting, and when we're playing the games there's never really a big feeling of deck building like you get with Dominion.For $5 it's fun. I've enjoyed it twice so far, but I question how much more I'll enjoy it. I'll probably stop playing it with my girlfriend soon and use it to introduce friends into deck building games. The game lacks longevity, but it'll be a nice travel companion.

This is the perfect way to be introduced to this game. I play games with my wife and Ascension is one of our favorites. This apprentice edition boils the game down into as few cards as you could use and still get the full experience and uses cardboard tokens. It's as cheap as you can get and it's quite fun. After having played this, I think you will buy the full game, but this is fun by itself as well and at this low price, it's not much of a risk.
