Would an average, everyday cook (not a professional) be able to appreciate these? What makes these so much more superior than other brands?

I'm also a basic, everyday cook. When my husband and I decided to get rid of our mish mash of cooking pans accumulated over more than a decade as poor college students, he talked me into what I thought were the outrageously pricey copper core AllClad pans. After cooking with these for about 15 years, I have ne regrets. They heat and cook food evenly, never warp, and are simple to care for (I do sometimes put them in the dishwasher). These are heavy pans, especially with a full load of food or water in them; however, I find it reassuringly difficult to knock/tip one over, plus it makes warping one very unlikely. A factor in our purchase was that these stainless pans can't outgas poisonous fumes, as do many older nonstick pans at higher temperatures, that can kill our pet parrots. We primarily use the two different sizes of saucepans and the stockpot. The 12 inch skillet with cover is used for sauces or sauteing large amounts of vegetables. We rarely use the 10 inch saute pan and could have skipped buying it. I am a better cook because of the reliability and durability of these pans. I anticipate that they will last the rest of my lifetime.

Are they made in the US?

Every piece of the All-Clad brand is made in Cannonsburg, Pa. which is an outer suburb of Pittsburgh. We are looking at purchasing the 10 piece set and have done a lot of research on All-Clad. Even the metals the company uses to make their pieces come from within the USA.

Yes. But working in restaurants for 20 years, this is what real chefs & cooks expect. We grab a kitchen cloth and grab the lid. It's second nature. The cookware is the best I've ever used.

Do any of the lids fomr the set fit the two fry pans?

They do, but if cooking something in the fry pan requires a lid, using one of the sauté pans in the set would be a better option.The fry pans have short, sloped sides that enable steam to escape effectively . . .placing a lid on the pan would cancel out that feature. The straight sided sauté pans have taller sides and keeps steam where you need it, it the pan . . .the lid enhances that feature.

Heat up and give even heat. A little hard to clean. Very well built. I would buy again.

These are, I in my most humble opinion, the finest pots you can buy. They're solid, beautiful (if you're into pots) and well designed. If cooking is your passion, you can do no better. The internal copper core does an outstanding job of spreading the heat evenly and the interior and exterior stainless steel cleans up easily. The pots are even dishwasher safe although you may need to use copper polish to restore the bright finish of the exposed copper band if you do use the dishwasher. Please note, the pots won't do the cooking for you so if you have no idea what you are doing in the kitchen, you can still burn dinner or turn out a lousy meal...but at least you will have done it evenly and in style! On the other hand, because they cook so well, they could make learning to cook or expanding your cooking horizons a joy. A couple final notes. 1) The pots are heavy. All-Clad definitely did not skimp on the materials. Fortunately, for the heaviest pots, they have a secondary handle on the lip of the pot to help you lift. 2) They are expensive. I looked everywhere and could not find All-Clad discounted. Even retailers that carry the line are careful to exclude All-Clad when they have their big sales. That said, Amazon's price is as good as any, and with Amazon Prime, the pots were delivered to my door the day after I ordered them (all 54 pounds in one box) for only $3.99. 3) These are heirloom pots. I had a hard time reconciling paying so much for the set until I realized that we'll own these pots for the rest of our lives and that when we're gone, our children will continue to enjoy them.

A beautiful quality set and the pans and saucepans are a good size. Having said that the lids are poorly designed as the get so hot they burn my fingers.

These are the best pans we have ever purchased. They heat evenly and quickly. Expensive, but I expect them to be used by our children after we are gone :)
