Portable distraction that could save your life
At just the size of an egg, this alarm can be an effective tool to distract an attacker with just enough time for you to get away.PROS- Loud enough in a moderately noisy area- Clip and loop make it easy to attach anywhere- Alarm can be quickly and easily activated, an important piece when every split second counts- Alarm starts a bit softly and ramps up, giving you the opportunity to silence any accidental discharge- 12V battery included- Sabre is a well-known, reputable self-defense brand- Fairly priced, although it costs the same as a personal pepper spray- Can be significantly silenced for testing purposes by placing a finger over the speaker holeCONS- Can be accidentally triggered if the safety pin is somehow unexpectedly pulled. Re-insert pin to turn off- Sound may be ignored by many bystanders not knowing that it's a distress call- Alarm starts a bit softly and ramps up. In a life-threatening situation where every second counts, this could become a problemTIPS- Test the alarm from time to time to ensure it still works and that the battery is operable. You would not want to find out that it stopped working while you are being attacked- The sound can be muted by placing a finger over the speaker hole- Pull the pin to sound the alarm, put it back to turn offOverall, the key to a successful getaway is to temporarily distract the attacker so you have enough time to get away. You can use a combination of this alarm, a quick kick to the groin or knee, a poke into the perpetrator's eyes, and/or a whack to the Adam's apple while screaming for help and running away. Every extra second you can give yourself to run away could be saving your life, and as such, this alarm is a good tool -- when used in combination with other techniques (such as self defense and being aware of your surroundings) -- to have in your self-protection arsenal. If you found this review helpful, please click the "Helpful" button below to encourage me to write more. Really Loud and Attention-Getting But Need a Firm Tug to Activate
I've been carrying this for a while now but haven't had to use it. This is a nice sized oval shaped device (it looks somewhat like a flattened egg shape) with a metal snap clip on the top which is also the pull ring for activating the loud annoying-sounding alarm. There is also a wrist cord loop on the bottom for one to carry on the wrist if desired. When I carry this, I slip it in my front pants pocket. The shape is nice to clutch and hold. This is brightly designed with the red, white and blue American flag design which I like simply because it makes this easy to find when I set it down. I carried this while hiking in a secluded area primarily in case of wild animals. My hope was, if I encountered any threatening animals such as feral pigs or a bear, the sound would scare them away or annoy them and I could throw this in a different direction away from me. However, I didn't see any animals, let alone threatening ones, so this remains only a theory for me. To activate, it takes a firm tug at the top to the metal key ring part. The metal pin pulls up and out which activates the alarm which hurt my ears with its piercing sound. To me, it sounds a bit different from other alarms so it should be attention getting. It sounds loud, shrill, and warbling a bit to me so it really is an undulating wave of attention-getting sound. If it's not loud enough, the instructions suggest that the battery may need to be changed. To stop the alarm, it's easy to push the pin back into the top until it clicks. It's actually easier to make the alarm stop than to activate it. I felt it took a firm tug to trigger the alarm but that's good so it's very unlikely that this would be accidentally triggered. The battery should be tested periodically and its life is approximately 12 months according to the instructions. The alarm takes a 12V23A battery and a tiny screwdriver is needed to open the chamber. Personally I wouldn't want this to be sole protective device I carry and it wasn't when I was hiking. However, it's very useful as one method of scaring those that are unwanted away. I think this does its job well and provides a psychological sense of safety.

like a tweety bird from hell. noisy, but can be muted with a closed hand.
Well this little device is quite loud and in a quiet area would attract attention, which is what it's designed to do.I think the american-flag motif is tacky as all getout, but the fear-driven demographic probably has a pretty good Venn overlap with people who have a flag fetish. Then again, people carrying around really ugly american-flag items may be more likely to have concealed weapons and a desire to use them, so there may be some protective coloration involved.I've bought my wife similar devices before and this one seems to do the same job. I found that a man-sized hand - mine - grabbing it can silence it nearly completely, but that could be useful if you're being strangled or something. Really a single finger over the noise-hole will do it, but still that's one less finger the mugger has to use on you.Bottom line, it's probably reasonable for a person who otherwise is a likely crime victim to have such a thing as a passive annoyance to those who prefer to commit their crimes in relative silence. Probably also some good practical-joke uses.Strikes me that the battery is probably hard to change, requiring a screwdriver and an unusual battery, but lets face it... if you use this enough to wear out the battery, you're just taking too many walks in the dark and should re-evaluate your life choices.

Super Simple to Use
this little key chain will emit an attention-getting sound. It is not ear-splitting but it is probably enough to deter ne'er do wells and attract law enforcement. The device is cleverly designed. It serves as a keychain and also has a wristlet. It is light and easy to carry. Battery operated (battery IS included) it is simple to use. To activate just pull the crown. To shut off, replace. Simple. I take this to work to deter ill doers and also when I am walking my dogs to repel animals like coyotes and bears. Luckily I haven't had to test it in a real-life situation. Ironically when I used it to see what it sounded like it attracted all my dogs. but they know me and also probably thought it was a new-fangled treat In threatening situations there is usually not much time to react. The ease of use makes this perfect even if you have weak or arthritic hands or are physically small. The simplicity of the device makes it an ideal item for those who may be reluctant, unable or unwilling to use things like pepper spray.

grabs your attention
The Sabre USA personal alarm is very convenient to keep on your keychain. I sometimes leave the house very early or get home late so this device is nice to have. It fits very comfortably in the palm of your hand. The pin pulls out easily, but you do need to apply first pull pressure. I apparently didn't initially and had to read instructions because I thought I was doing something wrong. Pin pulls out completely and alarm sounds; put back in and it stops. The alarm is not very loud though. Loud enough to attract attention if you are in a somewhat populated area. But if you are outside and people inside, they may not hear you. We didn't when tested, but something better than nothing and you never know who may hear. The patriotic design is also cool. People will ask you what it is. It clips easily and has a battery included so you can use soon as you get it. Uses a 12V battery by the way. Decent buy, just don't expect a bull horn.
