X-Men '92: Warzones! (Secret Wars: X-men)

A Loving Throwback to the Classic Cartoon Show and 90's Superhero Culture (Few Actual Ties to Secret War Event)
Sim's book is a funny, loving send up to one of the single best superhero cartoons ever made (outside of Batman the Animated Series). In the Battleworld zone of Westchester, the classic X-Men team from the 90's cartoon show still thrive and have managed to broker peace between the humans and mutants. A comedy series first and foremost, X-Men '92 is (like Old Man Logan and A-Force) a Secret Wars tie-in that has few actual ties to the main event and feels more like a "pilot" for a new series (this one took as there are two other volumes for the '92 team). The story, as it were, sees the X-Men discover a new rehabilitation center in Westchester where evil mutants are sent to learn to undo their violent impulses. Founded by Cassandra Nova, the center offers the X-Men a tour, but things quickly go awry when the X-Men learn Nova is actually possessed by the Shadow King. From there the book at times is a straight forward rescue mission (with the most 90's team of X-Force heroes ever showing up to bust the X-Men out), but is more a meta critique of the 90's approach to cartoon shows and censorship. Nova is literally attempting to "clean up" the X-Men and make them more acceptable for families. She tries to get Wolverine to come to peace with his own inner demons and has Gambit put a promise ring on Rogue's finger. All in all it is a fun read and a must have for fans of the original cartoon show (if you didn't grow up on the show this nostalgia bomb might not be for you).

The best era of comics.
Sadly, it's the best we're gonna get out of Marvel nowadays. Right now, Marvel is about politically correctness and dark stories about death and subsequently pointless rebirth, but X-Men '92 reminds us of when comics were at their best. The 90's may have been the best time for comics before everything went 'emo,' but the problem with this series is that it relies to heavily on nostalgia and acts like a comic book version of "That 90's Show." Instead of bringing back the drama of the 90's X-Men, it makes stupid jokes here & there and gets kind of kitschy.Still, the artwork is better than most of what Marvel has to offer and it does bring back the best era in comics, so 4 stars.

A bit too much kitsch
This is enjoyable for nostalgia purposes, Sim's dialogue mirrors some of the 90s cartoon and the classic Claremont feel. The artwork is a throw back without actually being a caricature of 90s comic art or the mistakes of Rob Liefeld nor does it just mimic JIm Lee's 90s work. That said, this volume has two problems, the Secret Wars tie-in makes the plot seem incoherent and the mimicking of the 90s television show often comes at the expense of the depth of X-men and X-Force stories. It's enjoyable, but it doesn't stick.

These review is from someone that casually like comics. I bought this for nostalgic purposes. Without ruining the story, I'll say it is okay, but you would have had to been keeping up with the secret wars story arc and a bunch of other arcs. This is a huge complaint of Marvel right now, everything is tied together and nothing stands alone. That's great if you have a massive comic book budge and tons of a free time, not great if you buy a few graphic novels a month.

Disappointment, I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I felt that the cover art for this comic is very misleading
