You Fail, Akuma
Akuma was released in January 2018 at a price of 8,480JPY which is $59 US. I got mine on Amazon for $49.92 and the current price, as I write this review, is $49.19.One thing I really like about Bandai’s figuarts figures is their consistency. It’s not perfect but you can pretty much expect good things. For me, Akuma is a disaster. I am shocked. As I was testing the shoulder articulation, I pulled one of the arms back and it came right off. I guess I pulled it back too far (which wasn’t that far) and pushed it back in. The next moment the left arm came off. Push it back in. Then the right forearm came off, then the left. I have never seen joints so loosely held in and it made manipulation of the figure extremely difficult. The shoulders and forearms are basically held in by nothing and slide in and out with no effort. How in the hell did Bandai allow this out? It’s not even like there is a reason for them to be so easily removed since there are no upper arm or forearm replacements. If it was just one shoulder or one forearm I might assume that I got a bad joint but this figure appears to have some serious design flaws. I watched an online video review of Akuma and the reviewer had the exact same issue. In fact, he did the second half of the video with only one arm attached because it would not stay on.Akuma’s legs are fantastic. They lift high and easily and he can drop nearly into complete splits. He’s well balanced so he can do hold a side kick without a stand. There is a hip swivel and his leg can rotate slightly where his shin meets the pant leg of his gi. Akuma has some excellent ankle rocker and although his ankle cannot rotate it’s not really necessary thanks to the other leg rotation he has. It would be an overstatement to say that his legs are as good as his arms are bad but these are about the best legs I’ve seen. Akuma can assume some very impressive poses but articulating the figure is so painful because of how flimsy the shoulders and elbows are.The overall appearance of the sculpt is a mixed bag. It’s mostly good and I like the look of the shoulders but the biceps and triceps are anatomically incorrect. Not sure how they messed this one up but coincidentally Storm Collectibles also got the upper arm muscles wrong for Akuma. Weird. There is a lot to like about this figure but the joint issues are a deal breaker for me. I just cannot in good conscious recommend it which is a shame because it’s not like there are a ton of s.h.figuarts Street Fighter figures. The Storm Collectibles Akuma has its own issues but none compare to the problems here. This isn’t the worst figure I own but it is the most disappointing. I did see a few online reviews that didn’t mention arm issues but sometimes I worry that there is a quid pro quo situation where these reviewers get the figures free and then give a positive review. I don’t think it’s an explicit agreement but it’s nice to continue to get free product. If you want a great s.h.figuarts Street Fighter figure their Cammy is fantastic. In fact, ALL the other figuarts Street Fighter figures are way better than Akuma.

Awesome figure.
Awesome figure. I’ve heard complaints about this figure which made me kinda hesitant the buy him. But when I saw that the price had dropped to $35(which is the cheapest i’ve seen)I pulled the trigger and was willing to overlook the issues people had been pointing out. The reviews i’ve seen many pointed out that his skin had a shine to it and that the figure had a tendency to fall apart but maybe I got lucky because he has yet to fall apart on me and though his skin does have a shine but it’s not as bad as I thought it was once I had it in hand. My only complaint is that his range of movement in the shoulders are pretty limited for example you can’t get his arms completely horizontal. But nonetheless a great figure.

Genial
