Practical, purposeful revision strategies. A very useful book.
This excellent book combines research and practical strategies. It’s incredibly useful for teachers and for pupils - as a head of English, I will also be buying copies for all of the members of my team with GCSE classes to help them guide their pupils to much more purposeful revision.Parents would also find it incredibly helpful; I am often asked by parents for guidance on how to support at home, and this book will help me give them really tailored advice.Pupils do typically struggle with English revision for both literature and language: their revision can often be limited to endless notes, highlighting and making cue cards which they don’t use properly!Teachers could use this book to set directed, simple and effective revision that will really help pupils develop purposeful study skills, and ultimately, deepen their knowledge and skills ready for the exams.

Revision Support using research - A super user friendly student guide
This book is excellent for students. As teachers we tell students and go over effective revision methods with them, but often they will fall back to ineffective methods. This book is clear, considered and focused on exactly the type of revision techniques we encourage in school all the time. So much so, that we have placed a school order of 150 for the English department. I really do think that encouraging students to read this and make their own notes on the techniques will help unlock revision for them. I was nodding along as I read and although we teach English Literature and Language discreetly, I do believe that this will help students with both subjects. Highly recommended for English departments and students alike. Thank you, Mark.

Beware the Language advice
As a tutor, I have very mixed feelings about this book. Most of the literature section is useful (for students, for teachers it’s all quite obvious). However there are some errors e.g. saying a quote uses chiasmus when it doesn’t (why do GCSE students needs to know about chiasmus anyway?!) also the example paragraph on Macbeth is closer to A level standard so totally unattainable for the majority of students. The real issues however are with the language section where students are encouraged to prelearn entire creative writing answers, having whole paragraphs on flashcards - unrealistic, unhelpful and a sign of lazy teaching. Examiner reports year on year comment on how some students clearly just used a memorised response and it wasn’t relevant to the question. A decent teacher should be able to teach writing well enough that students can respond to the task at hand on the day.

The perfect revision guide!
An extremely helpful and reassuring guide for all students. Everything has been so carefully considered, even down to the book's size, to ensure that this is a truly effective tool for students' independent study and revision. It contains superb high level exemplars and student responses to accompany the strategies detailed in the guide whilst managing to remain wholly accessible to all students at every stage. As a teacher, I've found this book particularly helpful in terms of how I can relay theory/approaches to revision most effectively. Highly recommend!
