A Rock Memoir with Real Written Talent. Loved It.
When reading a celebrity memoir, I’m not usually in it for the writing, but for the behind the scenes gossip and stories from someone I admire or find fascinating. I wasn’t expecting much at all from Guns and Roses bassist Duff McKagan when I picked up his first book It’s So Easy (and other lies). I was a quasi GnR fan and figured he would mention Kurt Cobain at least somewhere in there, but basically, my beau strong armed me into reading this because he loved it so much. That said, I was beyond impressed by the end of the first chapter with how eloquently written this was. There’s wisdom and wit and the voice of a real storyteller within these pages. I never saw that coming. It was also very interesting for me to read about someone I didn’t already know everything about. I never knew Duff as anything outside of GNR, but hearing how far back his career stretched and every step and stagger he took go get to where he ended up was quite a rollercoaster read. This book reached into some of the darkest depths of addiction and acknowledges a number of deaths in the Rock and Roll world. Frankly, the fact that Duff is still alive and able to write this book is amazing. And he doesn’t hide any of his demons while writing this. It’s open and honest, but it’s also written as a story. It flows and it contains wisdom and allows you to draw from the words, like Duff lived this life and made these choices and mistakes so I didn’t have to. But boy, what a life it must have been.Originally posted on citygirlscapes.com
