When wifi just won't cut it.
My new work laptop doesn't have a LAN slot. That seems to be becoming a bit of a 'thing'. My husband's Chromebook doesn't have one either. The slimmer the laptop, the less likely they've bothered to put a hole for your LAN cable, because these days everybody's happy with WIFI so they don't need cables - or do they? In the midst of the massive broadband-sucking 'work from home' caused by Covid-19 (or more likely due to the millions watching Netflix at home) broadband service seems to limp and fall over after lunch. I live in the countryside where broadband is never going to get compared to Usain Bolt and in a house with 2-foot thick stone walls. My study is a long way from the Wi-fi router so I have a good old fashioned LAN cable running through the attic and into the room.So what to do when you've got all the gear but no hole? Buy one of these. The model was recommended by work IT and they got it just right. Not only does it work, but it doesn't take up one of my two very precious standard USB ports. Instead, it plugs into a slot on the other side of the laptop that I hadn't even realised was there. I think it's a USB C and I have nothing else in the world that would fit that particular hole so I'm more than happy to sacrifice it to this nice little shiny black contraption. It works. That's really all you need to know. It doesn't solve all the problems of long afternoon teleconferences - it can't fix everybody else on the call's rubbish connections - but at least I'm more confident that I'm part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Great USB-C to Ethernet adapter
You can't really go wrong with Belkin. All their products that I've used are great. This plugged in straight to my lightweight ethernet-lackong laptop, since I needed a cable connection instead of WiFi for game streaming with Nvidia Geforce Now. It installed and worked automatically on Windows 10.This is one of the adapters recommended by Nvidia. I can definitely recommend it. Saw great performance increase and connection stability, compared to even 5Ghz WiFi (laptop was next to router).

Short cable but works
It does what it needs to do and I get up to gigabit speeds as advertised. However, the picture shows a long cable length, it bends around the ethernet socket and extends back up to the socket or past it, but in reality it doesn't do that at all.In other words, the picture shows a missing cable length, it is actually really short. Its also a little pricey. But other than that, it works well.

Works with iPad Pro 2018 Models
Not only does it do what it says in the tin, but it also allows me to connect my iPad Pro 2018 model to my LAN/Ethernet connection. Perfect.

Finally a cable that works with new 2020 m1 macd
Perfect. Finally, a cable that works with thunderbolt 3 over usb-c as found on 2020 M1's mac and a monitor with displayport port. This is after trying two cheaper but still highly rated alternatives. No wonder why apple sell belkin stuff directly from their stores....
