Excellent Reference and Great Daily Guide!
To be honest, when I first got this book I was both overwhelmed and a bit disappointed. My first reaction was "there is too much to read, I just want a book that quickly states what I should eat for what I want to heal." I put the book away for a couple days--but then I started looking through it and actually reading it! My attitude immediately changed. While this book has a lot of pages and looks more scholarly than I was hoping for--the author has written it in a way that is easily understandable, interesting, and most important helpful! I felt embarrassed that my first response to the book was that it had too many pages and that I didn't want to read so much.I did find the pages that list the foods that should be eaten depending on which of the five defense systems you are interested in. They are in charts near the back of the book in Appendix A. The five systems are: Angiogenesis (blood vessels and circulation), Regeneration (stem cells), Microbiome (healthy bacteria), DNA Protection (I didn't know this was even possible), and Immunity. The chapters for each of these areas goes in depth explaining why. I actually found this information very interesting when I actually started reading it!The book is divided into three main parts. Part One explains each of the body's natural defense systems. Part Two is on what to eat to beat disease. Part Three is on planning, choosing, and acting. It includes topics such as the 5 x 5 x 5 framework the author has created that makes it easy to incorporate these foods. It also has a chapter on "Exceptional Foods" and "Sample Meal Guide and Recipes."If you are looking for information on what to eat to help our body's natural defense system this book should be one of the top ones you consider!

Skimps on the details
Takes the conclusions of some research at face value without taking the implications to the next level. For example the recommendation of fish for one purpose but without sufficient consideration of other factors taking into consideration ocean pollution. Considering that Dr Li doesn't have the army of knowledgeable supports as does Michael Greger this is understandable and it is why 'How Not to Die' is a far superior offering on this complicated subject.

Not your normal diet book
It is a ‘heavy read’, but once you get to the end you realise why the choice was made to write it that way. I do not like the way stats have been used in the book. They are all as percentages but you don’t know how they were calculated so could be exaggerating the effects they are trying to show. The source documentation for each claim is given in the book if I wanted to look it up. Overall I do think it is a worthwhile purchase as it shows how food can be as powerful as a pill in curing illness.

Illuminating - Informative - Inspirational
Really useful - I'm applying the info in this book,it has changed the way I see food and therefore the way I live. You have to work your own way through this book, I don't think it's an easy read, and I think the dietary changes and optimisation of diet will come over timeas I get more familiar with the principles he's sharing.Well worth while, intelligent, doesn't talk down to you, it's got findings from oodles of scientific studies so you can see where he's coming from and understanding health through the concept of the body's 5 defence systems is a true illuminating light bulb moment.I'm still head scratching a bit in terms of actually living the regime, getting the balance right and I'm not totally clear about the amount of veggies etc you need to chomp through to get the benefit.Great stuff - probably the best book I've bought on health and diet. Buy it.
