Backup NAS
I already have a QNAP NAS which is a beast, but after a power failure last week I asked myself what would I do if I lost all the data stored on my QNA? Of course I have cloud backups of some documents, but there is over 3TB of data that is not feasible to backup to the cloud. The answer is this TerraMaster. I set it up as an RSYNC server and set up a one way sync from my QNAP. Now all my data is sitting on this TerraMaster and ready for access in case the QNAP should ever fail.My observations of the TerraMaster are firstly the build quality seems strong. I like that they include a screwdriver and screws for mounting your hard drives. The OS is ok and for my purpose it does exactly what I need. I read another review said that everything was in Chinese, but that wasn't the case for me. You can change languages if you hit an issue by selecting the globe on the top right hand corner of the window. My biggest complaint is it is loud. My QNAP is downstairs next to the modem and I placed the TerraMaster upstairs on my desk as not much point in having the backup next to the master. The constant hum though drowns out all other background noise to such an extent I won't be able to keep it here. I think I will swap locations with the QNAP.One final thing I should warn, on a gigabit network I was only achieving a maximum downlink speed of 74.6MB/s. The average was around 65MB/s, so it is slow.I think if I keep this NAS out of sight (and earshot) it should work well as a backup. If you have never used a NAS before and want to get something (relatively) cheap to try out then this is probably a good entry model to go for. If you already have a NAS and looking for a backup you could consider this as an option.
