Captain Planet Foundation's EcoSTEM WATER Kit How can we protect one of earth's most precious resources: water? CPF's EcoSTEM WATER Kit will engage 3rd to 12th grade students in inquiry investigations, making and demonstrating concepts with models, collecting data for a citizen science project, designing solutions for an engineering challenge, and implementing an environmental stewardship project. The EcoSTEM WATER Kit provides opportunities for students to: • observe and collect data using the Water Cycle Model (1) from American Educational Products to duplicate evaporation, condensation and precipitation (your own lamp and ice required); • explore plastic pollution with Algalita's Ocean Debris Investigation Kit (1) by analyzing actual samples from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch; distinguishing plankton from plastics; discovering which pollutants sink and which float; and mapping floating trash; • test physical and chemical parameters of water quality, such as dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrogen, turbidity, and temperature; and/or analyze biological indicators of stream health by surveying macroinvertebrates, using the Earth Force GREEN Standard Water Monitoring Kit (1) and waterproof shoe covers (8 pair); • engineer solutions to pollution by creating working models of filtration systems, inspired by The Groundwater Foundation's Awesome Aquifers project (1 aquifer model kit + 32 compostable clear cups; your own earth materials and coffee filters required to make individual models); • design and conduct an environmental stewardship project, involving use of Almetek Storm Drain Markers (10) and safety vests (8), to increase community awareness that contaminants dumped down storm drains end up in the nearest waterway; • engage in standards-based learning experiences in "three-dimensional science" for which details are provided on a special Captain Planet Foundation web page.
