Five Great German Short Stories: A Dual-Language Book (Dover Dual Language German)

Yes, this book is on the difficult side for the B1 level. However, since it is translated side by side in English and German, I do not feel left in the dark. It is written as decent German language literature would be, facilitating learning the language. I feel it is more B2-C1 level than B1, but that is the only way I am ever going to get beyond B1. I definitely do not recommend using this book until you reach about B1 in reading, or you might find it too difficult or just use the English translation if you are trying to learn German (or the German side if you are trying to learn English). But, once you reach that level, you should be able to benefit from using this as a study aid.

Bought this book to help me get accustomed to reading German at length, and to help me expand my German vocabulary. Overall I’m enjoying this book a lot and I’m happy with this purchase.

This is a great book for learning German as its facing page has the English translation. The stories are pretty good, and the book has a bit of history in the forward, so you can learn about a bit of the history of German literature. I would recommend this for anyone learning German or thinking about learning German (or wants to read some short stories from some of the best short story writers in German history).

Each of these stories is a gem. This is some great story-telling, and it's worth the price of the book just to read these masterpieces in English. As literature, this would probably warrant five stars. If your are truly proficient in your German, by all means buy this book.BUT... if you are at more intermediate level you will find this book well beyond your abilities. In my case I know a few thousands words, can hold simple conversations, managed just fine ordering dinner in my last trip to Germany, and do okay with a German comic book. The complex vocabulary and intricate sentance structures were well beyond my grasp.The shortcoming in this case is the reader. If you have been studying German for many years and wish to hone your skills, this book could be for you. If you have been at this for just a couple years, you will only find it frustrating.

I like it for learning German and practice reading skills

The most boring, tedious stories I've ever read in any language. The dual language translations are great, but the stories themselves are insufferable.

I like that the translated text follows closely with the original, it makes it easy to decode phrases from the original text. I am using this to learn German language, and have found it very helpful with making me comfortable with the language. It makes a difficult language feel more familiar and accessible

Good stories, bad font

Not for beginners or intermediate learners even though it has the English translation. Small , short anthology of interesting short stories. Good for people who are interested in German literature or in advancing their knowledge of the latter.

Bought as a present for my son. An interesting choice of stories and would recommend it for someone at Stage 3 German.
