How do I use the tabs when the dividers are so dark?

I know what you mean. I just tape the label to the outside of the tab. Wrap the tape around the tab so that the label is protected and stays in place. Hope this helps.

Is this a good product to hold birth certificate and important docs ?

Yes. I use it for birth certificates, titles, social security cards, the title for my home, etc
