Is the key basically a flat-head screwdriver made to look like a key? lol...

I sent it bahck. It was cheap plastic and broken. I could have used a small flat screwdriver or anything flat. It was a piece of junk!! I would not buy another one. Even if it did work, you could only fit a small amount of stuff in it.

how hard is this to install?

Sorry to say that I haven't installed it because it won't fit in the space I wanted it to go. it' son a boat so tricky installations are not uncommon.
