'Splish Splash' wasn't the beginning for Bobby Darin, nor was it just a flirtation with Rock 'N' Roll. Raised in a Manhattan tenement, Walden Robert Cassotto found a way to escape: through his music. Forming a band in high school, he first played Pop hits of the early '50s and standards; then he moved to Calypso and Folk before becoming one of Rock 'N' Roll's pioneers, cutting records reminiscent of Elvis Presley, Fats Domino and Little Richard, and writing what became one of Buddy Holly's biggest hits: 'Early in the Morning'. This collection draws from sessions originally released on Decca, Atco, Brunswick and Capitol; and recorded in New York, Nashville and Los Angeles. In addition to hits like 'Splish Splash', 'Dream Lover' and 'Early in the Morning', the album includes 'She's Tantastic', originally issued as a tanning cream promotion, and 'Clementine', a swinging Big Band precursor to Sinatra's 'Old MacDonald'. What a great collection of BD's rock and roll classics!
I think I have most, if not all, of these songs on other CDS but my new car only holds one CD and this is perfect. It is guaranteed to pick up my mood because these are such great songs, done by a master. What a great collection (including Oo-Ee Train and Rock Island Line)!

Not up To Bear Family Greatness
Great choice of material not easily found in other collections, however I have founf better sounding copies of hits like Splish Splash on other collections. Bear family is supposed to be the BEST reissue label. Soundwise this could have been better just like the Brenda Lee Rocks cd, which is tinny sounding.

Great Music and Sound Quality
I have some Bobby Darin's reissues (e.g. The Hit Singles Collection, Story, Capitol Collectors Series, The Ultimate, etc.) and I can say that this is one of the finest I ever heard. Bear Family did a wonderful job with all 36 tracks: each track sounds very clear. The package comes with a 48 pages booklet which contains a mini biography with nice photos of the star and detailed information about the tracks.
