Could have been one of Shepp's best if not for...
...the distracting vocals. The chanting you hear when you preview "Money Blues" continues the ENTIRE track. All 18 minutes. I figured it would last for 5 min, or at least let up for some solo work, but no. It gets old. Had it been just for a few minutes it would have really added to the track, but the vocals just dragged on. The only flaw with "Dr. King, the Peaceful Warrior" is that its too short. Otherwise it is a beautiful, elegant track paying homage to a great man. After this wonderful track, and after the beginning of "Things Have Got to Change", I was hopeful that the rest of the track would make up for the disappointing opening track. But about three minutes in, more vocals start and dont let up for the next 13 minutes. Just a repeating of "Change goddammit!" over and over. It distracts from some exceptional playing by Shepp and Moncur. Why Shepp decided to add these vocals for so long, I dont know, but it sure is disappointing. Again, had the vocals been for just a few minutes, it could have added to the track, but instead it detracted from some truly amazing tenor and trombone. I know Shepp was trying to drive home the point that America was in a sad state in 1971, but five seconds of his emotional tenor carries more emotion and says more for the plight of the Negro in America than all the "Goddamits!" in the world.Shepp's music is matched in emotion only by his mentor John Coltrane. Because they were a product of the civil rights movement, the power they played with will never be matched again. Their music needs to be cherished and never forgotten. But if you are just getting into Archie, start with "Four for Trane", "The Magic of Ju Ju", "The Cry of My People", and "Goin Home". "Things Have Got To Change" is an interesting, but disappointing addition to my long list of Archie's albums (12). Only necessary for the Shepp completist, not casual fan

Vabbè: è Shepp. Io lo prendo comunque ma c'è di meglio
Continuo a preferire il periodo più free/avanguardia a quello funk/soul.The cry of my people è anche un bell'album, sulla linea di Attica Blues. Belli ma non è lo Shepp che preferiscoThings have changed non è particolarmente memorabile.Qualità sonora migliore rispetto al twofer For losers/Kwanza ma peggiore rispetto ad altri titoli di Shepp usciti per Impulse.
