HTE Survival Compass: Multipurpose Marching Lensatic Compass for Outdoor, Camping and Hiking (Green)

I'm new to using a compass, so I read quite a bit before settling on this one. I'm very pleased with it. Seems like a pretty standard lensatic compass. It points to magnetic north (checked against another compass), but it takes a while to wobble over there. No big deal. One cool feature I found is if you pull down the lock while holding the base, it pulls it automatically in to sighting position. My toddler dropped it from 6 feet up, and there's not a dent. The magnifying lens is not strong enough to start a fire - I tried. I was hoping otherwise. Still, 5 starts for being a durable piece of functioning equipment.

This compass in nothing fancy but it seems solid. For the price it is well worth it. I'm not a serious camper or orienteering expert but it does point north and seems to meet all the requirements for a basic navigational aide. My family recently started doing some hiking and camping and I picked this up just to have on hand in case we needed it and just for fun. I've broken it out a few times to show my eldest daughter the bare basics of reading a compass and using a map and it's been great for that. Like I said for the price it's a great little compass

I don't know about the ones the rest of you folks got, but mine has a major and incredibly stupid defect. The hinge pin for the cover is steel, which means that it will always throw off the readings since it is magnetic. This gets worse if you ever try to remagnetize your needle which is sometimes needed since the pin will then become even more magnetic. I'm going to try to drive mine out and replace it with a piece of brass rod.

Sure, I have GPS devices, but I always have a compass with me too! I learned to use a compass as a kid and still depend on one when I'm camping, hiking, backpacking or working in wilderness locations. This compass works well and is well constructed.

GIving one star due to false advertising this compass was advertised as having a metu case, no such thing it's plastic it does however work, this compass ships from China should have been more cautious about who I ordered from.

Not a very high quality item. It's good for showing the fundamentals of a compass to a child, but you wouldn't want to be navigating in the wilderness with it.

You get what you pay for. This item is not up to the lowest standard for a compass. Look for a better unit.

Works well. decent construction. Will buy more.
