First Base

Loved listening to this album as a child with my dad, it is going to make a great christmas gift for him. Order came way earlier than I expected with a lot of appreciated packing and a nice handwritten note. Would definitely buy from this seller again

This group had potential. Babe Ruth had talented composition and performance. First Base displays alacrity with several different musical styles and still comes up as a cohesive work. If you are interested in some of the more obscure offerings from the late '60's and early '70's, this should definitely be on your list.

Interesting mix of blues and rock. Liked it when it came out, really enjoy it now.

This album was one I don't even remember why I knew about it. Upon receiving it I was very pleased and I believe several additional tunes have been added to the CD, which fit well.

Babe Ruth never did get traction or stay together long(original band members) but what they did put out was quality progressive. There music can be heard on youtube. Having Cd I can take it with me.

I heard a track from this on a repeated "Old Grey Whistle Test" a few months ago, and although I had heard the name (way back in the 70s when I was a prog-rock fan) I had never bothered to listen to their music at that time... There was so much wonderful music (and so little money) that one had to be choosy - so I had LPs by Tull, Yes, Crimson, VDGG etc., but none of what we called the second division bands - not because they were no good, but because one had to be selective.So, in the light of 40 years (!) of listening to music, surviving the "Punk and Rap" generation, what was this like?Excellent - great tunes, wonderful guitar, terrific rhythm section - and those vocals... Jenny Haan is a wonderful combination of Grace Slick and Janis Joplin - but has her own unique sound and style.

Great album, saw Babe Ruth on the Old Grey Whistle Test and was hooked. I bought the CD to replace my vinyl, I haven't heard the other albums but will buy them sometime soon. The album as always been a favourite of mine and truly recommend it to any one interested in the period of British rock bands.

Dating unmistakeably to the early 1970s, Babe Ruth's debut album consists of half a dozen lengthy rock workouts as per the norm for that era. 'Wells Fargo,' the first of three original titles, is hard rock with vitality and a preoccupation with Old West themes. As is the case across the album, the percussion is subtle rather than bludgeoning, giving the feel of the music a lean, distinct flavour. 'The Runaways' is a surprise after this, a gentle piece that builds slowly to a string-backed climax with a memorable, insistent melody. The other original song is the highly-charged 'Joker.''King Kong,' a Frank Zappa number, is a more prog-like instrumental that sounds out of place, but the other covers, 'Black Dog' and Morricone's 'The Mexican,' are superb. Though guitar dominates 'Wells Fargo,' keyboards are often more prominent on other tracks. The vocals tend to be a bit thin and at times shouty, but this is an album with a lot of energy and no small amount of craft.
