Great southern rock from an "under-known" band!
I first discovered these guys after reading about Kim Davis, whom I knew was in a band with Stevie Ray Vaughan when they were teenagers (Blackbird). At that time, by all accounts Kim was basically SRV's equal when it came to his abilities on the fretboard, so naturally my curiosity about Mr. Davis was piqued! I found out that he played with Point Blank in the 70's and early 80's, and being a huge fan of southern rock, I snapped up this two-fer CD in a second...I am not disappointed! This is great stuff, and since I'm a southern rock fan from way back, I'm disappointed that I never knew about these guys sooner, as Point Blank harkens to a sound made more famous by Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet. John O'Daniel features some great vocal abilities including amazing range with a gruffness in his voice that is reminiscient of early Johnny Winter, but fuller. He cuts back nicely on the grit during the softer parts of songs, almost to the point of sounding like a totally different singer...lol! One other member (it might be Davis) also chimes in a few times on some lead vocals with a smoother but excellent delivery, and some songs feature fine harmonies. The lyrics don't exactly possess the ingenuity and imagery of classic Skynyrd songs by the late great lyricist Ronnie Van Zant, but the power of the music makes up for it. The twin guitars of Davis and Rusty Burns prove to be a formidable pairing, each possessing talent that is on par with any southern rock band! While Davis as a guitar player obviously did not reach heights of notoriety that his famous ex-bandmate Vaughan did, it is clear that his talent was never overrated by other bandmates who were with both Vaughan and Davis in the Blackbird days.Sadly, Kim Davis is no longer with us, so I am glad that I was able to grab this CD of Point Blank's first two albums before it goes out of print! iTunes does not sell these...just one or two of the band's later offerings, which were more geared to AOR radio in the early 80's...pffft!...not for me! Though Point Blank's greatest commercial success was achieved with their later AOR material (most notably the hit single "Nicole") they ironically now promote themeselves on their website as back to being a southern rock band, probably because interest in the old classic southern rock of the 70's has been greater in the last two decades than early 80's AOR...face it, it's just more timeless music! :-)The sound quality of the first album is very good, and somewhat better than the second for some reason, but the second one is still overall good, especially when compared to CD's that I have of the old Blackfoot albums, which suffer from far less than optimal transfer from analog.Highly recommended for all southern rock fans!!

Some great boogie music on these little known albums, all tossed into one CD.
Buy this cd of you can get a bargain on it....then burn a copy for yourself that only has the "good stuff" on it...this CD contains two albums, and about one good album worth of material....Yes...There is some great boogie music on these little known albums, all tossed into one CD. There's also some filler, and some outright crap disguised as music.... Goes to show you what a record company and producer can do to an otherwise brilliant band, in an effort to make them palatable for the drooling masses that would buy pop music...

Great Two-Fer From Pro-Law-Enforcement Texas Boogie-Rockers
POINT BLANK/SECOND SEASON is a great reissue of the first two albums from the Texas Southern rock band Point Blank, whose lead guitarist, Rusty Burns, has recently come forward to advocate capital punishment for kidnappers and increased funding for law enforcement, which is less unique among Southern bands than the fact that these albums sound more like Montrose-meets-Ted-Nugent than like most Southern rock. That in itself is a great thing, since the former band's two lead members, guitarist Ronnie Montrose and vocalist Sammy Hagar, as well as Ted Nugent, advocate the same things that Burns now does, as well as having the same blues and R&B roots as the great Southern bands. This CD features some great rockers and blues numbers that hearken all the way back to Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's and Buddy Guy's wonderful 60s recordings. ALLMUSIC GUIDE's Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave their later two-fer, AMERICAN EXCESS/ON A ROLL, a better review, so his kids should have to complete 600 hours of community service in order to graduate from high school because of the negative review their father gave this wonderful slab of roadhouse rock & roll barbecue. Get this CD at the first chance you can.
