Beefy choil, well and substantially jimped; also, a magnificent knife
It's unfortunate, but it's a fact; if you want to read about the new breed of belt and pocket carry knives, you have to learn some words that no one has ever heard before. The choil, for instance - the thick part at the base of the knife blade, where it fits to the hinge. Not sharp, it's a load-bearing part of the knife. The Native5 design has little nubbins - "jimping" - both on the top, where your thumb can rest; and also below, where along with the hinge area the choil forms a curved, jimped area where your index fingertip or first knuckle can rest. Gripped this way, the knife offers great control and a great feel - it's fun to hold and use this knife. And I learned a few new words to bore my friends with! I hadn't carried a knife for 20 years or so; Dad's old made-in-USA Buck Stockman still serves but I wanted to see what else was out there. And it turns out that, like everything else, the technology has advanced substantially. Single-hand open, for example, used to be a novelty that might get your knife banned or taken away by a lawman; since 2009, though, that's been a non-issue for assisted-open (non-springloaded) knives like the Native. You put your thumb in the round hole; you apply slight pressure; the knife swivels open like greased lightning and 'snicks' into place with the firmest, lowest-tolerance, no-rattle lock I could imagine in a knife. Single hand closure is also possible - press the spring loaded spine into the handle detent and press the lightly-swaged back of the blade against your jeans - it pops loose and swivels closed fast and sure. And I do recommend single-hand operation, because this knife's spear point is menacing. Like Sauron's gaze, it "pierces cloud, shadow, earth and flesh." It's poked holes in several shirts - after the point gets through, the ultrasharp edge cuts thread - and when I've tried double-hand closure, I've often gotten a painful stab wound for my trouble. I thought OK, I'll just dull the point by scraping some grit out of a groove in a steel can lid - no dice. The lid was sliced; the edge was left intact. See, there's this new steel technology. I don't understand it but it has to do with metal powder and weird alloys and the name is CPM35VN. It's chrome-moly, like my old bike, but also vanadium - like my dad's 1947 journeyman carpentry hammer, tough yet resilient - and niobium, which is a fairly rare transition metal. I have been trying to dull this blade for the month I've owned it and no dice. I can't dull it; I can't chip it or roll it or make it any less efficient for cutting. I'm not using it to cut nails or do things to intentionally break it; but in daily use it just hasn't changed a bit. Its surly gray-iridescent gleam seems to challenge me. Try me on something, it says. See whether I cut it or not. Amazing when you have a knife clipped into your pocket how you find things to do with it. I've been keeping this in my Levi's 501 'fifth pocket' where it's a perfect fit. I changed the clip to suit my preference - using a Torx you can move the clip to any of 4 orientations. The clip is a little tight but I guess I could bend it to lessen that; I haven't bothered. Anyway, now that the knife is always close to hand, I use it about 2-3 times an hour. It's always nice to have it and there's always that little moment of surprise when it cuts cleanly and quickly and that annoying task that was going to take a moment is now completely solved. If you haven't guessed, I love this thing. I love the G-10 nubbly rubberized grip, I love the practical shape and length of the blade, I love the silly Spyderco makers' marks, and if someone took this knife away from me - doubtful, it'd make a great personal defense weapon - but if they did I'd have to go get another one immediately!

Another Great Spyderco
An all-around great knife featuring Spyderco's proprietary blade metal SPY 27. Think of it as enhanced VG-10 which the company has used for years on their Japanese models. PROs-Very sharp out of the box and light weight while feeling significant. 4-way changeable pocket clip (left or right carry, blade up or down). Very good grip on the handle. Good value, size and blade shape. CONs-At this time the action is fairly stiff. I could free it up a bit but will leave it "as is" for now and see how it goes.

It's Excellent
Very well made piece by Spyderco. Blade is sharp AF, and slices paper easily out of the box. I will update review in several weeks/months when I sharpen the SPY steel for the first time. Most reports it sharpens easily and has strong edge retention. We will see. The handles are a love them or leave them kind of thing, but I love the FRN grippiness and overall texture. For me, everything about a knife has to click with my brain. How it feels in the hand. The texture of the handle. The action of it opening and closing, i.e. can I use it as a fidget spinner. This knife checks all those boxes at a reasonable price. Tolerances on the construction and action are highly refined. I always enjoy a well made stainless steel carry clip. The Native 5 is lighter than my Civivi Elementum, despite having a larger overall carry profile. SPY27 is supposed to be corrosion resistant, so I can see this being a good knife in potentially wet environments. Probably enough knife if you are the 3rd mate on a tugboat in Puget Sound, but not enough knife for a full scale survival situation, if that makes sense. Fidget spinner approved!!

May need a custom clip
I like everything about this knife, especially the steel, except the clip. I bought it to replace a Benchmade North Fork, which replaced a Benchmade Griptilian. The 154 steel of the Grip needed a lot of sharpening. The S30V of the NF is prone to chipping and the thumb studs kept catching on my pocket. My attention was drawn to the Native Lightweight by reviews of the fantastically sharpenable new steel. The texture of the handle is not as pleasing as the NF's but makes a much better tool. I'm getting used to the thumbhole method of opening and I like it. It's not as easy to open and close as an axis lock, but the the NF sometimes came open on it's own just as I was about to deploy it. Not a good thing. The only real problem is that I found the clip so tight that it was a pocket shredder even after I sanded the handle a bit, and I didn't like its shininess nor how high in the pocket the knife rode. A titanium, anodized deep pocket clip off eBay solved the problems. The steel is worth the trouble; Spyderco should offer it in other models.

Feels good.
I've happily owned a "Delica 4" for a few years now and this knife a pleasant upgrade in steel, feel and looks. The first thing I do is usually remove the belt clip since I pocket carry only and I may have stripped a screw head with a mis-sized alien wrench. I think it's a metric size head maybe? I'll follow up on that once I get the correct tools and/or fix. The sides are definitely "grippy" which is all the more reason I want my clip off to get a more secure grip. Having said that, the clip is so well done, it is sort if a work of art all in it's own. ( I still want to have the choice of taking the clip on or off, even at the cost of ordering another screw if I have to drill it out. So...) Overall, it just feels good in the hand, the texture of the grip and the blade is hair shaving sharp. I think I'm about to put a lifetime of use to this thing.

Quality American made knife
Another solid American made spyderco Been looking to add a lock back to my spyderco collection and was initially going to get the 15v version but couldn’t pass up on $113 for the spy27. All my spydercos have required a break in period the liner locks, the stiff compression locks with lock stick and even my manix 2 spring but that’s to be expected with a quality product with such tight tolerances and this was no different but even more so very very stiff out of the box took a lot of effort just to thumb roll it open with almost a ratcheting clicking type feel and because of the locks design messing with the pivot screws to improve the action like on their other knives won’t work on this kind of lock m. but after a little bit of lubricant and A lot of breaking in the action over a few days pretty much all the grittiness is gone and now can actually spidey flick or thumb flick it open without having to use my wrist which I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to do without taking it apart and doing some polishing. It would be nice if they did offer a compression lock on this full size model and not just the little one I think the stiffness of this knife will turn a lot of people off because knife guys like to fidget and to do that with this knife will take a lot more elbow grease than normal but if you’re looking for quality strong, lightweight ,reliable and durable knife this has you covered.

spyderco native 5 g-10 plain edge = excellent!
I just got this knife and I can say that I am very well pleased with it. I have all kinds of knives, but this one will be my new every day use/carry knife. It feels very solid all around and locks securely in place when open; I wouldn't think that this locking mechanism would ever fail on a person. The size is perfect for me because I didn't want a knife that was too big or too small. It rides comfortably clipped in my pocket or I will sometimes possibly carry it in my maxpedition single sheath, which houses the knife perfectly. This isn't one of those over sized, overkill type knives, rather it is just the perfect size (about an inch and a half shorter than a sharpie marker when closed and about an inch and a half longer than a sharpie marker when open). I have the spyderco dragonfly vg-10 also, so this isn't my first spyderco. I am very satisfied with spyderco products and I would recommend them to anyone. I think this knife is of very high quality and I think that the $125.00 spent on this knife is a great bargain. If you have any hesitations about buying it, just do it, I don't think that you will be disappointed. Also, the knife is much lighter than I expected; I don't feel the weight of it when I have it in my pocket.

The Best Native 5 Currently Available
I own two other Native 5's, but they both have FRN handles. FRN is extremely tough and very lightweight, but... well, it feels like FRN when you hold the knife. For me, G-10 has a much nicer feel. This Native 5 with G-10 handles is now my favorite Native 5. The current crop of G-10 Native 5's are made without liners and use S30V blade steel instead of S35VN. While I would have preferred S35VN, S30V is still an excellent steel for a knife in this price range. Not having the stainless steel liners like the older Native 5 G-10 models is a positive feature in my book. The G-10 is plenty strong and does not need liners. Removing the liners makes this Native 5 G-10 significantly lighter than the lined Native 5 G-10. In fact, this linerless Native 5 weighs only 1/2 ounce more than the FRN Native 5. UPDATE: I channeled my inner Nick Shabazz and took apart my knife to clean, lubricate and inspect it. While there was some sort of Loctite on the screws, it was NOT the dreaded RED. The screws came out easily. Once I had one handle off I could clearly see the improvements over my FRN Native 5's. These improvements are: - Phosphor bronze washers are now on the blade pivot. (My FRN models have no washers.) - The back spacer is now steel and the lock bar spring rests in a cavity on the steel back spacer - The four screws on the back of the knife, screw into the steel back spacer - The blade pivot has a D-shape on each end which fits into a D-shape on each G-10 handle.

Starkes Messer!
