Q: Do you need attic access??

Yes - for a replacement installation the fan needs to be mounted between the ceiling joists in the attic. Existing wiring may not be long enough to wire up the fixture while below the ceiling and hooking up the vent hose isn't possible before the fan is installed. This particular fan is really designed for new construction. I had to make several modifications to the fan housing, wiring, and sister two 2x4 spacers to the joist on one side since the hanger on the vent side was too short. In short, most of the work is done in the attic.
