Before judging or having any opinion the best suggestion is studying. Knowledge is our power. A few words about the author of this magically healing ointment. The name of Dr. Vishnevsky (1874-1948) is familiar to anyone, educated or totally uneducated, who used to live in the former Soviet Union, and it is because of this Vishnevsky Oinment, which, since it was created, has become an irreplaceable part of the first-aid kit in every family. Dr. Vishnevsky was a military surgeon, a doctor-practitioner, specialized from brain wounds to lung diseases and pathologies in urine and GI tract. He was the first who found connection between nerves and inflammation and led a scientific study on that, and he was also one of the most significant names in the cradle of the modern neurosurgery and anesthesiology. He was a Professor Luminary in one of the best universities in Russia (Kazan Imperial University that later became Kazan State University) in whom science and practice went side by side. This ointment, as well as his anesthetic methods saved thousands and thousands of soldiers' lives during WWII. Living in the Soviet Union we never went to the doctors with open wounds, unless it required stitches to be done or a broken bone to be fixed. This ointment was our first doctor, and always made magic: in a couple days even ugliest scratches or open wounds were almost healed. Now take a look at the active ingredients: #1 - Birch Tree Tar Oil , a most powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and wound healing substance, known in treatment for more than a millennium. I once read in some memoirs of a foreign Ambassador to Ancient Moscow from the 14th c, saying that the Russian cured everything inside and out with just plain birch tree tar oil, putting it on the open wounds, smelling it and taking it inside with honey. BTW I myself was taking this magic substance inside for my Asthma treatment with a great success. It is so powerful that you have to start with just one drop! My aunt was cured from aggressive Tuberculosis when she was 18 with some balsam from a local healer wh used this oil as the one of the ingredients in her medicine - has never had any lung issues since then. She is 78 now. YES, if you are going to make it by yourself, it can have some cancerogenes, that is why it is very important to make sure that the tar oil was gone through multiple filtrations and bought from a trusted source or an official drug manufacturer. BTW birch tar oil is not unknown, but very well forgotten medicine in America too. #2 xeroform, the well know antiseptic, the active ingredient of which is bismuth (Pepto Bismol and xeroform dressings are very familiar to all Americans), #3 Castor Oil , which has a most infiltrating ability into the cells, sort of UPS delivery truck for all possible medications. It has also some antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects too. But still the main mission is - DELIVERY. #4 Cilica , this essential mineral for our body, on my opinion, in the liniment might be used as a stabilizer. When I saw that this balsamic liniment is available in Amazon I ordered it immediately, as I knew that after my foot surgery I would not have any complications or scar tissue healing with this magical liniment. Meanwhile my husband, having heard from me about this ointment, decided to use it on his stubborn skin leisure, which was treated by his skin doctor several times with no vivid effect. Only after 2 applications for the night, they are almost gone completely! One can not see them, though barely can feel when touching. He is continuing applications under a band-aid, saying that my "gypsy" treatment ( that is his name for nontraditional for Americans treatments), as always, somehow worked:)))) I wish you good health. This product is a little miracle in a bottle it’s been around for decades. You must know what you’re getting it for before using it, but it does work.

If you can stand the smell..this stuff is great. Have it on hand at all times for those of us who don't like antibiotics.

I would like to say this product is amazing was expecting it to be dark brown but it’s light brown. We use vishnevsky ointment basically on anything. I got bitten by a cat couple years ago and I put this ointment on and it went away in couple days. I used this even on my pets. A feral cat came over to me with torn tail and I put it on and he was healed. The cat I own right now , her owners left her behind and when she came to me she had like two small holes in her stomach and I put this on her and she was healed in like a week or two. This stuff is amazing and does it’s magic. But not a lot of people know about this stuff. :(

Great healing if you can take the smell. It smells like something that has burned. Somewhere in my brain I remember being told that ashes smoothed over a wound was healing.
